Airport cops arrest 13, seize 29 boxes of pirated DVDs

MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE) Thirteen men, including a policeman, were caught with 29 boxes of pirated DVDs (digital video discs) by policemen of the Aviation Security Group (ASG) at a checkpoint of the international airport early morning Friday, authorities said.

Police said the boxes, which were seized at 1 a.m., were bound for different Philippine Airlines (PAL) flights departing from the Ninoy International Airport Terminal 2.

Chief Superintendent Atilano Morada, ASG director, said it was only by chance that the pirated DVDs were discovered after the policemen flagged down the suspects’ vehicles -- a white Toyota Revo and green Mitsubishi Adventure, were stopped because they were using a siren -- near the Nayong Pilipino to ask why they were using a siren.

"Actually the arrest [for the illegal DVDs] is incidental because [the policemen] noticed the siren first, and when the passengers were asked for papers they could not show any,” said Morada in a phone interview.

When the vehicles were inspected, the ASG operatives found the boxes containing the pirated DVDs.

In a separate report, one of the 13 men was said to have claimed he was the nephew of Maguindanao Representative Simeon Datumanong.

In an interview over ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo, Edu Manzano, chair of the Optical Media Board (OMB) who counted 30 boxes instead of 29, said each box was estimated to contain around 2,000 pieces, or an estimated total of 50,000, of “pirated optical media,” mostly child and adult ****ographic movies.

Manzano said the OMB is preparing to file charges against the 13.

In case this report is accurate... only in the Philippines. So what if you're the nephew of Datumanong???
