July 7th, 2019 08:15 PM #12i saw one.
a newly-painted crosswind. it drove in, as i was waiting for my emissions certificate.
it spewed lots of black smoke during the not-even-high-yet-rev emissions testing.
pina-uwi ng tester. "ayusin nyo muna, sir."
i don't know if it was the seller or the new owner, who was having it tested.

July 7th, 2019 10:29 PM #13For PUV, yes. Walang bumabagsak na jeep.
Yung private, i had an old corolla that failed. Took me 3 attempts to pass the test, after tune up, carb overhaul, change spark plugs, oil change. Surprisingly, it passed flying colors aftee i adjusted the tappets.

for diesel engines, you can rev the engine to 3000 to 3500 rpm for about 30 seconds to let the soot and carbon out. yan turo ng agent sa amin.
hindi ba masisira you ask? No, it won't.

July 8th, 2019 11:10 PM #18there has to be a better way to test diesel engines.
soot normally deposits on the inside surfaces of the exhaust system.
at high rpm, there is excessive gas and vibration in the exhaust tubes, causing the deposited soot to loosen and to be expelled, with dramatic visual effect.
the engine fails the test, not because it is combusting badly, but because the tambucho is full of soot.
i used to have the exhaust piping cleaned by a high pressure long hose in the gas station, but not anymore. pumapasa naman...
a friend once had his engine overhauled. somehow, the old engine oil leaked into his exhaust system.
after the engine was put back together, it couldn't pass the emissions test. apparently, the oil in his exhaust was causing high pollutant readings.
he had to replace his exhaust system, to pass.Last edited by dr. d; July 8th, 2019 at 11:14 PM.

July 9th, 2019 06:05 AM #19Modern engines (including diesels) have included anti-pollution devices. Kaso pagdating sa Pilipinas due to outdated thinking and bad habits, tinatanggal. Mahina hatak? DPF, Catalytic converter, thermostat tinatanggal, EGR iba-blank, PCV valve hose, bubunuyin at ive-vent sa labas.

It is repairable. But as oj88 mentioned, it is messy (when repaired) and best used as a last resort.
