Mayor, hotel trade barbs on conduct

MANILA, Philippines – Valenzuela City Mayor Sherwin Gatchalian Wednesday called for a boycott of a resort in Boracay for what he called its bad service and discourteous and unprofessional staff.

He added that he would file a complaint with the Department of Tourism against the manager and staff of the restaurant at Discovery Shores Boracay resort.

“I believe I am not being unfair by demanding, a public apology, in no uncertain terms, from the management of Discovery Shores Hotel Boracay for the humiliation, discrimination and insult which we experienced and to demand that the restaurant manager, Cesar Fernandez, and other personnel be reprimanded for their unjustified acts, ” Gatchalian said.

According to the mayor, at around 9 p.m. on Dec. 30, he and his six companions arrived at the resort ’s restaurant to have dinner.

Gatchalian said the receptionist immediately told him that they could not be accommodated because there was no available table. At that time, however, the mayor claimed there was an empty table near them with a “reserved ” sign on it. Several of his friends who were eating in the restaurant at that time offered him their table because they were about to leave, he added.

However, he claimed the receptionist still turned them away, saying the restaurant was closing in an hour.

After introducing himself, Gatchalian said he asked the receptionist to call Fernandez, the restaurant manager. Fernandez told him they do not accept non-guests of the hotel at the restaurant, he said. Gatchalian told the man his friend who had just left the restaurant was not staying at the hotel either.

Contacted for comment, Jose Pareña, the resort’s general manager, denied Gatchalian’s allegations that he was treated rudely by the restaurant management and staff.

He added that it was the other way around, with the mayor even cursing the employees.

Pareña said Gatchalian was turned away because he and his companions arrived just a few minutes before closing time.

Based on the last statement about closing time, I would've fired the manager if I was the owner. Never turn away guests. Tsk tsk...

Depende din kasi how many minutes before closing time bro. Remember restaurant yun, maaring sara na ang kitchen and off na ang equipments. Kaya nga karamihan ng resto dito may tinatawag na "last order" time di ba?. Sana kung simpleng tindahan/retail outlet lang un, pwedeng i accomodate ang mga humahabol.

If you're open e di you're open. Kitchen closing ay dapat after closing time. Kaya nga may sign showing operating hours.

For example, kung sabi hanggang 10pm ang resto, hindi ibig sabihin na 9pm pa lang, maglilinis na para 10pm makasara.

Yung last order... well, just cuz a lot of people do it doesn't mean na tama yun.

I will still fire the manager.

I just feel the issue was blown out of proportion simply because the mayor feels he should have been treated like royalty and should be spoiled by the restaurant staff like the way he gets his way back in his own city.

    Closing time is closing time.

Mayors and other elected government officials tend to act like they have the right to do whatever they They abuse whatever power they have and only act humble when election time comes around. Buti nga sa kanya . . . Pero kawawa ang hotel dahil sa bad publicity na ito.
