A former Law dean of the University of the Philippines (UP) on Wednesday defended a student who drew insults from netizens after he was seen on television trying to drive his car through deep flood water.
“You may be amused by the mistakes or misfortunes of others. But this does not entitle you to degrade their entire character or make conclusions about their whole person," said former UP College of Law Dean Marvic Leonen in a Facebook post defending Christopher Lao, the driver whose car was seen on television floating on a flooded street with Lao behind the wheel.
“Christopher Lao does not deserve the treatment he is getting from others on Facebook and Twitter. And yes, he is from UP College of Law and we are still proud of him," Leonen added.
Shown by GMA News on Tuesday, the video of Lao is now viral on social networking sites and, as of this posting, has made him the 8th trending or most discussed Twitter topic worldwide.
Intended to show the public the hazards of driving through flooded streets, the video has been taken down from the web by GMA News after viewers were sharing it accompanied by insults aimed at Lao. But a growing number of social media users, Mr. Leonen among the more prominent of them, have also expressed sympathy for Lao and defended him publicly.
"In such instances, social media is prone to abuse by its users because people feel so entitled to give their ten cents' worth of thoughts on a person they hardly know," wrote Julie M. Aurelio in response to Leonen's post. "Constructive criticism is a far cry from judgment."
Howie Severino, editor-in-chief of GMA News Online, issued this statement:
"Mr. Lao was already victimized by the flood and a lack of warnings. He shouldn't be victimized again. Many of us could have been in his situation. We are urging the public to stop the insults, as this has become a case of cyber bullying. We regret that our video, which was meant to provide a lesson for all motorists, was used in any way to make fun of another person." — With Paterno Esmaquel II/VS, GMA News
Ampch... so this is where our taxes go just as well? Okay lang naman magkamali, huwag lang maging arogante afterwards. He wouldn't have been heckled had he just laughed off his misfortune.
What's next, mommy and daddy will sue GMA 7, FB, Twitter, tsikot.com, etc., for child abuse and psychological damages? Then they'll sue Nissan for building a substandard vehicle that cannot withstand floods, then MMDA for not warning them, and of course, isasama na rin nila si PNoy since malapit daw yun sa bahay niya at hindi siya lumabas para pagsabihan siya na baha.![]()
If I'm this guy, this is the last thing I want, someone defending me in public, why? Lalong hahaba pa ang usapan, ngayon pati si ex dean madadamay pa rito, madadagdagan pa ang rounds neto sa mga social sites, more fuel to feed the flames..Kung tumahimik na lang siya at yung mga nagmamhal sa kanya, this issue will be dead max 1 week and a half. Alam naman natin na no one wants to talk about laos issues.. Kaso yun nga medyo mahina ata ang EQ. Sa IQ mataas sana kaso EQ eh ang pinaguuspan.
BTW 35k plus na fans niya sa FB as of 1:30pm....hehehe
looks like he'll have a good career as a lawyer for the arroyos and other corrupt government officials
Just goes to show that common sense is not common to everybody... (Even a Summa Cum Laude graduate of UP)....Christopher Lao is reportedly a Summa cum Laude graduate of BA Philosophy from UP
Philosophy pala ang kinuhang kurso,- e di Piliposo... :hysterical:

Watch this news clip. Akala niya mababa lang ang baha sa dadaanan niya. Too bad for him, may nakaabang na news team. The incredible floating car...
This is a story that will go on for ages... something that will be remembered every time Manila falls under flood waters.
I guess his parents did not allow him to go out these past few days.
