he was probably looking at either the bike in front of him, or the car to his right. "tunnel vision", i believe. it's not an uncommon physiologic condition. it's not an illness or abnormality. we fall prey to it, more often than we know.

so why didn't the other rider see him?
my theory is,
bikes moving at speed, from a distance, are just dead vertical pixels in one's monitor-of-a-brain. they don't register as motor vehicles. instead, the other guy sees bikes as a black hole in their field of vision.
