MANILA, Philippines -- Lawmakers as crook or villain in movies and telenovelas apparently does not make a congressman happy.
Pampanga Representative Aurelio Gonzales Jr. has filed House Resolution 2140 to appeal to the local television and movie industry to “minimize, prevent, or stop typecasting congressmen and congresswomen as villains or crooks in movies and television telenovelas, in order not to create stereotypes or negative public perception against members of the House of Representatives.”
“These portrayals are unfair and at the very least, sully the good name of honorable congressmen and congresswomen who work hard for the welfare of their constituents,” Gonzales said in his resolution.
“These negative typecastings influence the general public, especially young children, into forming a negative impression about the members of the House of Representatives,” he added.
The Pampanga lawmaker said that House members “do their best to bring excelnen public service to their constituents.” But he added that despite this, they are seen in a negative light because of how they are portrayed in television and movies.
He acknowledged that there are a few congressmen “who may have been involved in crimes.”
“But these are exceptions, rather than the rule,” he added.
“Aware that this issue is covered by the constitutionally-guaranteed freedom of speech and of expression, the House can only appeal to the local movie and television industry to minimize, prevent, or stop depicting members of the House in a negative light,” Gonzales said.

The sad thing is, we already have precedent of this in law.
There is already a law against speech that would cause disrespect to the government or encourage disobedience. It woudl be a simple matter to extend that to anything causing disprespect to persons in the government.

While we should respect the rule of law, Lawmakers only deserve as much respect as they earn.
