Another CONCRETE BARRIER accident happened today at EDSA. Read the MMDA's alibi in the news story below. You cannot always blame a driver's stupidity for hitting these barriers. And if the MMDA keeps blaming drivers for their stupidity rather than improving the SAFETY of these barriers, then I think they need to have their heads examined before they get more people killed or injured. In fairness to Bayani Fernando, he has many ideas. Many of them are stupid ideas though.

Concrete barriers cause 5-vehicle smash up in QC
    August 6, 2005 ABS-CBN News

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) earned the ire of motorists anew after its concrete barriers caused a five-vehicle smash-up in Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City, Saturday morning.

Reports said that a trailer truck first crashed into the barrier near the Old Balara intersection. The accident triggered the smash-up that included a taxi, a Mitsubishi Adventure van, a Honda Civic sedan and a Toyota Corolla car.

The multiple collision further destroyed the barrier and scattered pieces of concrete on the highway.

No one was reported hurt in the accident but drivers vented their ire at the MMDA. They said that barriers endanger motorists rather than help them on the road.

They said that the concrete barriers were not reflectorized and there were no warning signs.

The MMDA, however, shrugged off the complaints. They blamed the rain for the poor road visibility of the structures.

MMDA traffic chief Angelito Vergel de Dios said drivers should be more careful while driving in the rain. He said that concrete barriers placed in U-turn are usually covered by dust and mud during a heavy downpour.

Blame the damn rain. I blame the concrete! NOT REFLECTORIZED, NO LIGHTS, and not even road markings leading up to the barriers to show they're there.

U-Turns, Bad idea? In principle, NO. In application, DEFINITELY!

Just this morning, sa Commonwealth Ave sa tapat ng UP College of Kinetics, may nakita akong taxi bumangga sa concrete barrier. I think it's about time to remove these concrete barriers as they are dangerous.

If a solution to a problem is causing more accidents than its intended purpose, then you have to rethink of a more practical solution to lessen the risks. I don't think you want to implement a solution that will get people killed just to discipline them.
