The government should LOWER the number of PUVs on the road. This would help SPEED UP public transportation. How? The solution of moving more people on the existing roads is NOT fielding more PUVs. Its a matter of making those PUVs to make more rounds in a day. Fielding more PUVs will simply give more seats but end up moving slower as a whole.

Less PUVs on the road will result in better service because you can revoke the operating franchise of a transport company and give it to another who OBEYS the road rules. A bad example is the habit of certain jeepneys to pickup passengers at the foot of road flyovers. Given the flyover is only two lanes wide, the particular jeepney is blocking 50% of the road, slowing up everyone else. Why can't the driver stop meters before the beginning or after the foot of the flyover? This will keep the vehicles moving at a faster pace.

That's good in theory, but in truth there is a reason why we have rush hour, and that's because people need to be at work around 8-9am each day. Business isn't going to be any better off getting more people to work by 10am (assuming a trip takes 30 minutes) using less vehicles, because they'd be late and less productive to begin with. We still have to have a the minimum number of PUVs that can get everyone to work on time.

I think the idea of revoking franchises (or maybe professional driver's licenses) for chronic traffic offenders is a good one though. The less idiots we have stopping in the middle of the road, the faster everyone can get to where they're going.

Right on! People (everybody, officials and citizens alike) sometimes forget that we have rush hour because everybody has to be at the same place at the same time.

gusto ko lang po humingi ng comments sa naisip kong idea..

bakit hindi na lang ang lagyan ng color coding eh yung yellow colored vehicles? like yung sa transportation (jeepneys,taxis,buses). kasi sila naman yung sobrang dami at sobrang nakakairita mag-drive at gumagawa ng halos lahat ng traffic dito sa pinas.. ang mga private vehicles naman kasi may mga kailangang puntahan like work diba? sila naman kahit na yun ang work nila eh sobra na kasi ang dami nila eh..

dapat talaga bawasan ung mga PUV and PUB, kung titignan mo naman di naman sila parating puno kaya lalo silang humaharang sa daan para mag pickup ng pasahero. Kahit sabihin pa nila na mas marami ung private vehicles kesa sa public eh di naman humahrang sa daan ung mga private vehicles para pumickup at mag baba ng pasahero.

Oo nga eh. As much as possible sana mawala ung mga jeep. Ung bus din sana mangalahati.

Nakakainis pa kasi nyan, bigla na lang sila lilipat ng lane. Tapos ung ibang jeep nagzi-zigzag pa. Dapat dito magshort course muna kahit mga good manners lang. Minsan makita mo lalabas ung dura from the window na lang bigla

The only solution is to discipline the drivers. The number of jeepneys, busses, Tamaraw FX's, etc is adequate enough. The problem, is that they cannot even pull over properly to yield to passing motorists. This is what causes the traffic jams when somebody doesn't pull over properly, the rear bumper juts out, so the people behind slow down, creating a chain of events that leads to long queues. Buti rin sana if people wanting to make a U turn prepare ahead of time so that they do not directly cut passing motorists. Thing is they enter the main thoroughfare and then proceed to cut several lanes of traffic just so they can enter the U turn slots. The U turn slot idea was OK if and only if motorists know how to yield to passing motorists and enter only when safe. Kaya when it comes to slow moving traffic, people cut left and right just to get to their destination.

Again when it comes to discipline, look at those who split lanes. The U turn slot effectively negates lanes already, making driving in a straight line virtually impossible since people tend to drive in a skewed manner. That's why people cannot speed up and that's why it slows things down.

And when MMDA personnel see that motorists cut others off they just let it be. This makes motorists think that it's OK to do that so they continue to do so, and hence nothing improves. Plus we all know the kotong cops na kumukuha ng lagay sa mga PUV's para di sila ma-apprehend. It's all a vicious cycle.

That's why any potential solution won't work if we don't start with ourselves. The solutions thrown into the fray were just band-aids to temporarily ease traffic, not really to cure its problem.

well hehe i was thinkng of something like, white and silver (all shades from light to dark) vehicles on mondays, black and green on tuesdays, red and blue on wednesdays, beige and on thursdays, colors not mentioned on fridays. hehe just an idea, but crazy enough to work, i think.
