MANILA, Philippines – An employee of the Bureau of Customs is facing charges of attempted murder after he allegedly fired his gun at a vehicle after a traffic altercation in Makati.
Police said customs clerk Paulino Elevado, who was driving a white Porsche, chased down a Toyota Innova after a minor mishap.
Footage from a CCTV camera in the early hours of January 21 showed Elevado’s sports car speeding on the southbound lane of South Luzon Expressway as it chased the Innova being driven by a 20-year-old student.
The student, who declined to be identified, swerved to the service road heading to Villamor Air Base to evade Elevado.
However, Elevado did not give up chase and eventually caught up with the student and his passenger.
Elevado and his companion, a certain Florencio Bato, allegedly beat up the student and his friend.
When Elevado threatened to get his firearm from his vehicle, the student and his friend sped off.
The student told police that Elevado fired at his vehicle 4 times during the chase.
“Naririnig nila may pumuputok. ‘Yun lang ang sabi nila,” said Inspector Willy Masiglat of Pasay police.
Bullet holes were found in the rear of the Innova.
Elevado and Bato were caught near a Pasay hotel and were turned over to police. Recovered from them was a caliber .40 calibre firearm.
They are facing charges of physical injuries and attempted murder. Both were jailed for 2 days before being released prior to the preliminary investigation.
ABS-CBN News tried to get a response from Elevado but he could not be contacted as of posting. -- Report from Anthony Taberna, ABS-CBN News
A customs clerk who owns a Porsche. Someone has some unexplained wealth to explain for.
And I admire the presence of mind nung mga naka Innova, good thing they sought shelter sa Marriot hotel, and according to TV kanina, the steel barrier ng carpark entrance ang nakatulong para matimbog yung naka Porsche. May kasama pa palang business man yung Customs Clerk sa loob ng kotse.. 2 things,, puwede regalo sa kanya yung car or sa businessman mismo ang car at yung clerk ang inside contact nya sa mga importation.

hanga ako dun sa estudyante, we are the same age pero he handled it better than i would if I was stuck in a situation like that, running into a hotel with guards and a barrier = GENIUS
Grabe custom clerk naka Porsche! parang may extortion case pa siya and dami talagang illegal na pera sa custom...
Mentally disabled is apt to the guy I guess.
If all allegations are true then you have a classic case study of an arrogant, corrupt government employee.
Hats off to the student for his presence of mind in such a situation although it's not explained what caused the incident.
I googled the name of the customs guy and here's what came up:

Customs employee faces bribery charges
(philstar.com) Updated October 13, 2011 01:23 PM Comments (0)
MANILA, Philippines – A worker of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) faced criminal and administrative charges after an importer said the official allegedly asked bribe money from him.
Flor Tagle, an import and export consultant for Prima Modas Inc., sued Paulino Elevado IV, an administrative aide at the Customs bureau, for violating the Code of Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees, and the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.
In complaint before the Office of the Ombudsman, Tagle detailed how Elevado denied the entry of Prima Modas’ shipment from China last March despite “favorable endorsement from the Office of the Commissioner.”
The shipment, the complaint said, contained gummed paper, hair accessories and men’s slippers, among others, passed the inspection conducted by the Customs’ Run After The Smugglers (RATS) program, and was cleared for release last March 28.
“When our papers were forwarded to the Office of the District Collector, Port of Manila, a certain Paulino Elevado met me and said that before our entry papers could get endorsement, we were required to give P200,000.00 or P100,000.00 without the snacks,” the complaint stated.
“The illegal demand made for grease money is quite big and has no legal basis, as such, our company did not agree. I pleaded for understanding, but he (Elevado) said ‘Kung wala ‘yung hinihingi ko, huwag na tayong mag-usap,” it added.
The Department of Finance’s Revenue Integrity Protection Service (RIPS) conducted an investigation on the matter and found probable cause to charge Elevado “for trying to extort the sum of P200,000 in exchange for the signature of the district collector of Port of Manila.”
“This is a proof that with the public and the government working together, we can cleanse the bureaucracy of corrupt officials who think of nothing but how to take advantage of our people in order to fulfill their self-serving interests,” RIPS Executive Director Romeo D. Tomas, Jr. said.
He called on other people who have experienced similar corrupt practices as well as concerned citizens to come forward and seek the government’s help through the Pera ng Bayan Web site (www.perangbayan.com), where they can provide information anonymously.
