If enough people want it... it's a collector's item.
There are quite a few cars that might count as future classics, or collector's items that aren't necessarily all that rare, but are desirable.
The Fiat Cinquecento, for example... there's a niche market for the restoration of these. The Mini has proven to be very collectible, even if it's relatively common, as is the Beetle.
Amongst current cars, a stock SiR might prove desirable in ten years (those are the hardest SiRs to find), a Ford Lynx RS (very limited edition... less than 500 MT versions in the whole world... only about 200-250 in the Philippines), the Honda Jazz (definitely), the Suzuki Swift, maybe the Vios , possibly the Suzuki Jimny... who knows?
These cars would be collector's items... but probably not valuable collector's items, like say a vintage Jaguar E-Type... but you don't have to be an expensive car to be worth collecting... (see the Mini).

um....if people collect it? :hihihi:
on a serious note, rarity does play a factor, but the biggest two factors IMO are the car's history, or special features that distinguish it.
for example:
the E30 M3 is a collector's item because it was essentially a street legal race car
the original Landcruiser and Defender because they were the original go-anywhere tough guys
the 60's Mustangs because all the middle aged guys lusted over them when they were kids
old Ferraris because of the combination of ultimate performance, styling, rarity and marque
the old Shelbys and Ford GT40 because they dominated racing in the 60's
Mini Coopers because of their quirky charm
some cars receive a resurgence because of Hollywood - like the Shelby Mustang GT500 (Gone in 60 secs) and Toyota Supra (The F&F)
and so on
oist! stop trying to boost your car's resale value!
Be careful with channels like "China Observer" on YouTube. There is a clear bias in their posts and...
