    actually

    Nubira=Optra

    what differs between Optra and the Wira is that the former isnt sold when Daewoo was still around. with the Wira, it even competed for sales against the Lancer. ;)

    I often see Proton Wiras with Mitsubishi Lancer Itlog front fascia assembly. Also, there are a couple of Wira taxis plying around the Metro. Do they still have that service center in Guadalupe?

    alam ko may brand na TATA pero pick-ups un kanila..

    aamin ako, nung tumingin ako ng wira, like a hatch..like to have one as project car, siguro wala namng 50 thou mga preowed nyan.. then project car, 4g63t! and lancer itlog/evo3 look...

    alam ko my nilabas silang turbo variant..1.8L turbo! di ko lang alam kung hatch or sa sedan...

    nga pala, may corner lamps pa pala ito!

    btw, with regards to the Satria, it has a Lotus tuned suspension. mas OK pa nga sana kung yung mga kotse di madala ng Mitsu ang dinala nila dito like the Cyborg in the form of the Satria. baka naging successful sila dito.

    The Malaysian local car industry was fiercely protected during Mahathir's time. You'd have no choice but to buy local because foreign cars are so heavily taxed. But that protection has been recently removed to allow a more level playing field for foreign car makers. Proton knows that it cannot rely on the government for protection and must now make quality cars in order to compete. The spent a lot on new technologies and R&D, even bought Lotus to bring in much need expertise and input on their new car lineup.

    That said, I'd still wouldn't buy a Proton for reason that I will explain below.

    Proton, btw, also sells cars here in Australia. Their model lineup are the Gen.2 (small car category against the Corolla, Mazda3, Lancer and Astra), the Savvy (light car category against the Yaris, Mazda2, Colt and Barina), and the Jumbuck (small utility vehicle). The Gen.2 and Savvy are entirely-Proton designed and manufactured, with some input from Lotus. While the Jumbuck is a small pickup truck built on the Satria/Wira platform which is based on the old Mitsubishi Lancer platform.

    Equipment-level and price are very competitive. Base models have power-everything, dual-airbags and ABS, with the 1.6L Gen.2 starting at A$17,990 and the 1.2L Savvy starting at A$12,990. Design isn't too bad either, with both the Gen.2 and the Savvy showing modern lines. Its in the build-quality where it takes a hit. I've examined both cars (but not test-driven) during the Adelaide Motor Show. In the Savvy, the plastics are thin and easily scratched, and looked like that they might easily fall off. The whole car itself looks poorly-built it doesn't look and feel solid you'd think its built out of aluminum instead of steel. The Gen.2 is only marginally better.

    Overall, I'd say Proton is below the Korean brands but still miles behind the Japanese, or the Europeans. Proton needs a lot of catching up to do if it wants to compete in the an already crowded market.

    Looks good! Now all they need to do is send it to the Philippines to have Kelseat fix the interior so it won't feel so cheap. hehehe.

    even in Malaysia itself, Proton cars have a reputation of being lemons. a friend told me that the Wira's design is already about 10 yrs old. there is no R&D involved with those cars, they just continue to churn them out. the only reason its being patronized is because its cheap compared to jap cars. Perodua, another Malaysian car manufacturer, has cars w/ better designs, build & quality (they have a tie-up with Toyota, & they are the ones assembling the Toyota Avanza in Malaysia). the Malaysian govt gave restrictions favoring Proton because only Proton can manufacture cars w/ engines 1.5L & above. Perodua can manufacture cars w/ 1.5L & below only. pero mas nag-thrive ang Perodua inspite of the unfair competition (si Mahatir kc nasa board of directors ng Proton & being the Prime Minister at that time, he naturally gave perks to Proton).

    wala ng tie-up ang Proton with Mitsubishi. they now have a partnership with Volkswagen, although i have yet to see VW's components in a Proton car. yung engine ng Gen2 is from Lotus (also owned by Proton).

    Like I said, the cars are not too bad looking. Probably because of the Italian design company, Pininfarina, they hired to design the cars. Its only in the build quality they they really suffered.

    Our old kapitbahay had a Wira sedan. Parehong-pareho lang daw ng Lancer iba lang ang tatak. Ginagamitan nga nila ng Lancer spare parts eh (may talyer kasi sila). Other than that, wala akong masyadong feedback. Muntik na rin kaming mapabili ng Wira lift-back noong nasa Pilipinas pa kami dahil mura nga. Ended up buying a 1990 Corolla instead.

    The 80's Lancer based Iswara is still alive in Malaysia hehehehe. The Waja is also known as the Impian (UK).
