While automotive technology has made digital odometer tampering difficult, it's still not impossible.

Some methods used for digital odometer tampering:

- Replacing the dashboard's entire instrument panel.

- Using a laptop computer and software to change the vehicle's automated control systems, reprogramming its computer and editing the mileage at will.

- Odometer rollback techniques are also spelled out on a number of websites that sell re-programming kits. With the correct tools (and inexpensive ones at that), a crafty odometer spinner can erase many thousands of kilometers from a vehicle's odometer within minutes.
