This question is something like a spin off from the show TOP GEAR where the three hosts go out in three super cars and find the ultimate driving road in Britain.

So here is the question, if you have a fast car, where can you find the ultimate driving road in the island of Luzon?

It would mean the road should be maintained (no potholes, etc), minimal traffic (so you don't have to slow down or get into a nasty accident), has nice curving stretches of road which you can take a moderately higher speeds, a great view of the countryside (but not a real requirement) and it should go on for kilometers and kilometers.

    ------------------

minor correction: the TOP GEAR best roads episode was Best Driving Road in the World and it was found somewhere in continental europe.

So far, for me the closest I have gotten to it was driving on the Star Tollway. Even then, the occasional car/van on the road with me forces me to slow down a bit when I pass them by.

There is another section of road, from Tagaytay to Nasugbu. If you are early enough to avoid the traffic and other cars on that stretch of road, it can be an enjoyable drive at more moderate speeds but in third and fourth gear. Unfortunately you still have to watch out for the occasional tricycle and jeep puttering by.

In my experience, the STAR Tollway, because of it's hilly locale, has several bumpy stretches. This was sometime 2004. I don't know the situation today.

Hilly roads made of concrete with no asphalt overlay tend to be bumpy because of the difficulty of pouring concrete on downhill surfaces. Wet asphalt is easier to control while pouring as it is more viscous.

AFAIK, my 2 best drives, so far, are the road to Batangas starting from Evercrest and the road to Infanta, Quezon. Beautiful cabriolet-required drives.

well based on the criteria above I'd say its the stretch of the national highway from sta elena camarines norte to sipocot camarines sur.. its the stretch of road after the entrance of quirino highway in camarines norte to the exit of quirino highway at camarines sur.. its approximately 110 kms of mixed mountain passes (sta elena to labo cam norte), long straights (labo to basud cam norte) and rolling hills (basud cam norte to sipocot cam sur) the roads are well maintained and traffic are from mid to almost none due to the quirino highway diverting traffic of heavy trucks, buses and almost all of the traffic going to southern philippines..

ang problema dito yun pabalik in the evening. hehehe! lalo na after a long weekend. it could take you up tp 3 hours para lang makabalik ng tagaytay from nasugbu.

yun stretch din from before silang cavite up to tagaytay sarap daanan. kaya lang nakaka gulat may mga tao motor at aso na biglang nasa gitna ng daan.

The road up to Mount Samat. Bumpy, broken roads, roaring under a canopy of leaves... and absolutely no traffic.

Been meaning to go up there. My last "blat" there was in a 1.3 Sentra. One of the most fun drives I've ever had.

The Santa Rosa to Tagaytay road is a good one, but there's way too much traffic.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

only if you drive up pretty early in the morning... like 630am on that stretch will it be enjoyable. Otherwise, traffic hell.

    North:
    - stretch of Bacnotan, La Union to the bridge before Tagudin, Ilocos Sur
    - Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur (scenic yung hiway, coastal view)
    - After Laoag, yung road going to PAgudpud
    - Zambales stretch (from Iba to Sta Cruz) coastal view din
    - Pangasinan (Sual - coming from minor curves downhil straight towards Alaminos)

    South:
    - stretch of Quirino Hiway in Sta Elena, CamNorte to Ragay in Cam Sur
    - the stretch in Dolores, Quezon to Gumaca

    Mindanao:
    - stretch after Digos going towards GenSan

    Visayas:
    - Iloilo (stretch of Pasi to Duenas)

    I'm taking notes here...

Try 4-5 am on a Sunday. Too many trikes and Jeeps after sunrise. I've only had two or three "runs" up there, and I only live fifteen minutes away.

The roads around Highlands are nice, but they're mostly of the low-medium speed variety.

I love the stretch throught the mountains on the way to Tugegarao, but the tarmac is broken and traffic is bad there unless you go late at night. Very quick road, though, and challenging in parts... and the view is absolutely lovely on a full-moon night.

I agree with Vhenok. Galing mo ah.

Pero I'll choose something else if only because to GET to those roads, you have to pass a lot of Bad Ones. Kaya NLEX for me!

    My favorite Luzon roads:

    > Zambales - Pangasinan Highway
    > "Laguna Loop" (From Rizal to Calamba around Laguna Lake)
    > Laguna - Infanta/Real (nice mountain roads... havent taken this since the landslides/flash floods a few eyars ago though)
    > Ilocos Norte/Sur
    > Kennon Road (whenever it's newly paved)
    > NLEX (Stretch bet. San Fernando and Angeles Exit, and the Southbound lane after the toll booth when there's no traffic)

    Mindanao:
    > Davao - GenSan - Isulan (South Cotobato) - Sarangani
    > CdO - Davao (via Bukidnon)

The Skyway may be nice, but it's too short.

The NLEX is a great place to "stretch your legs", but it's an expensive stretch.
