Here are my tips:

Before leaving the house:
- Check your water level. Rain can cause traffic that can lead you to overheating.
- Check your tires
- Check your gas

On the road:
- Does you car have a 4wd option? If yes, it's better to turn it on.
- Never ever turn your hazard lights on
- Turn your headlights on when the visibility is lessened
- Turn your wipers on. DUH!
