Auto parts manufacturers to build Pinoy utility vehicle
By Marianne V. Go
The Philippine Star 12/13/2006

The 130 members of the Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (MVPMAP) are going ahead and building a prototype of the Philippine Utility Vehicle (PhUV).

The MVPMAP expects to complete the PhUV prototype by the first quarter of 2007.

The PhUV is an Asian utility vehicle (AUV) type which the MVPMAP has been lobbying for to replace the abandoned people’s car program of the government.

The PhUV would be a totally new AUV built from completely knocked down (CKD) kits at the price of a used car, but with a high level of value-added local parts.

The target market of the PhUV would be buyers of used vehicles or those who cannot afford to buy brand new vehicles.

The tentative price for a PhUV unit is P350,000. The MVPMAP hopes to sell around 30,000 units during the first year.

The MVPMAP board has approved the product concept and the preliminary designs of the PhUV. The prototype PhUV will have a diesel engine. It is intended for commercial use as a passenger vehicle or for cargoes.

The PhUV would be ideal for business use on weekdays and for family use on weekends.

In a bid to prove that a lot of value-added parts can be produced locally and that an AUV can be manufactured at the target price, MVPMAP members will contribute whatever local parts they produce to complete the prototype unit. This will result in a high level of value-added local content for the PhUV.

"I am very elated with the response and enthusiasm that the members have shown. I guess this is their way of showing their concern for the local parts industry that is threatened by a declining volume of vehicles produced from CKD kits in an auto industry with sales that have not grown for the last few years", said MVPMAP president Eddie Jose.

Only vehicles produced from CKD packs have value-added local parts in them.

Those built from completely-built units (CBU) have no local parts at all.

MVPMAP is, therefore, looking for ways by which to help spur the sales of vehicles produced out of CKD kits so as to aid the over 28,000 workers dependent on them.

The MVPMAP expects to help the local auto industry break the 100,000-unit annual sales barrier in 2007, something not expected to be accomplished this year.

India's Tata Group is trying to produce a people's car for under USD3000 (less than PhP150K).

Of course, their technology is far more advanced.

seriously, sa tutuo lang we that belong to malay race eh descriminated masyado sabi ng mga sisters ko sa US and germany...mas mababa ang tingin sa atin kaysa mga chinese/yellow race...wala daw tayong malaking contribution na malaki sa pag-inog ng mundo...well, parang tutuo...sakit naman.

what i would like to see someday eh matutuo tayong magkaruon ng pride as a race..pinoy sana ang mag spearhead..i believe we have the capacity to do that...sana maraming mag invest na pinoy sa mga ganitong linya ng business.

And a solid rear axle to boot...

Commercial use, this has good potential. Jeepney owners may find competition here.

Hmmm... CKD din pala... nothing new here really... it is still just "assembling" rather than manufacturing vehicles.

What they should do is to lobby car manufacturers to put up more manufacturing plants here in the Philippines (like what Ford/Mazda did).

Sana ang humawak ng project may business sense...kasi kahit anong ganda niyan kung napulitika at na miss manage bagsak din. I just hope so, para magkaron tayo ng autong maipagmamalaki. Ang importante jan maayos patkbo ng company. Sa simula expect natin na mejo sablay yung design and durability. Just like the koreans, pero pag mahusay ang patakbo ng kumpanya in due time magiging ok din.

i agree with you sir ......problema lang mas marami ang may utak politiko sa atin kaysa doon sa mga may businees sense .if only we can export all those politikos and bring back all of our professional working abroad,we could be an economic power by now.

I can assign one or two of my part-timers to do the CAD. (I will take care of the expenses.) PM me for for contact details.

Actually question is how far do you want to take this project? Do you want to build a prototype of our own? If so, do we have the core expertise and access to facilities to do so?

Let me know. It should be an interesting and exciting project, if ever.

oo nga sayang lang pagod nila. wala naman sila malalaking factories. kung meron man car manufacturers na puwede magbaba, mga leading car brands lang yan kasi automated na production nila.

not being anti-filipino or anti-sariling atin, pero reality check na lang.

anyway there were attempts in the 90's na di'ba, nag-fail din. yun ministar isa na yun, la din nagawa. delikado pa sa kalsada siguro ala jeepneys, walang safety. baka makadamay pa.
