even in the movie line, miyagi-san admitted he did not practice martial arts for tournament points.
he claims in the movie, he did martial arts to survive the fighting in WW2, where he was a soldier.

also, his biographers say he did not do martial arts before the karate kid movies. but he did study, once the movie role got underway.
