THE Philippine unit of Ford Motor Co. has stopped producing the Ford Lynx at its plant in Santa Rosa town, near Manila, since June because of weak demand in the region, a company official said.
Ford, the country's only exporter of completely built vehicles, will instead start making the new Ford Focus sedan, Ford Motor Philippines vice president Don Gelines said.
According to the firm's promotional materials, the Focus "looks and feels just like a European car" since it shares the same technology with the Jaguar, Aston Martin and Land Rover.
Gelines said the Lynx suffered from weak demand and sales in the Philippines and other markets in Southeast Asia.
The Lynx was the first car model that Ford assembled in Philippines after it joined the government's automotive export program in 2002.
Also producing Escape, Tribute and Mazda 3 models, Ford had exported a total of 30,000 vehicles as of last April.
The Lynx, which comes in 2.0-liter and 1.6-liter variants, will now be produced and sold only in Taiwan, where the 500,000-unit market could make production economical, Gelines said.
The Santa Rosa plant will be Ford's regional manufacturing base for the Focus, which has been in the market for three years.
The company hopes to sell at least 1,000 Focus units in the remainder of 2005 and about 3,000 units in 2006.
The 1.8-lited Focus is priced at P919,000 to P939,000 per unit. With INQ7.net
