Discountinued only in the USA, the new 2012 Ranger (available to all other markets except the USA) is the reason why.

Actually the "global" Ranger is a Mazda development. As far as the American market goes, Ford is trying to make the commercial user switch to the Transit Connect, based in the 1st-generation Focus platform. The Ranger actually remained on production more because it is the cheapest vehicle from Ford to the American market.

PS: Unlike the previous Mazda-based (global) Ford Rangers, Ford Australia headed the development of the all-new Ranger.

The US loses the Ranger model because the new global Ranger isn't going to be as cheap as the current Ranger being sold in the US, and it's almost as big as the F150, which means it may cannibalize F150 sales.

The currently sold US Ranger sucks. Luma na sobra yun eh, mas maganda pa nga yung current Ranger natin kaysa the US Ranger....

Yes the new Ranger is just 2-3 inches shorter than the 2-door Regular cab F-150 with a standard 6.5-ft bed (the shortest F-150), but the new Ranger is still about half a foot narrower.
This is the Regular Cab F-150 with its standard 6.5-ft bed.
The F-150 SuperCab with its standard 6.5-ft bed and the F-150 SuperCrew with its standard 5.5-ft bed are both still about 2 feet longer than the new Ranger.

So if the F150 is not so bigger than a Ranger makes some sense to phase it out. Maybe even a 4-cyl version could be released either with the current 2.5L engine currently used in the Escape and the Fusion or a turbocharged to be added to the Ecoboost range.
