    May 23, 2012 9:07am

Four people were killed while four other wiere hurt in a road accident involving an SUV on Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway in Porac, Pampanga, a police report said.

Highway Patrol Group head Cheif Supt. Leonardo Espina told reporters the accident occurred at about 2:35 p.m. Tuesday, involving a Ford Expedition (XKW 985) driven by Dr. Richard Quilang, 43, a resident of Gagalangin, Tondo, Manila.

An initial investigation revealed the vehicle, with eight passengers, was traveling on SCTEX southbound lane when its rear tire blew up causing the driver to lose control.

The SUV bumped the railings and rolled over three times.

Four of the passengers, including the doctor, were rushed to Bataan Peninsula Med Center but were declared dead on arrival.

The fatalities were identified as Dr. Richard Quilang, Charlote Rivera, John Mallari, and Mariel Ocampo.

Meanwhile, Espina said the passengers who are under treatment were identified as Joyce Quilang, Rensie Ann Sabangan, Mary Joy Quilang, and Marian Jill Quilang. — LBG, GMA News

Is Ford answerable to this? Saw it on the news last night and the Expedition is a total wreck. Also read the accident of the Elantra at Alabang which killed 4 people. But it's the driver's fault in the Elantra case.

    I don't think so.

The accident is possibly cause by very old tires (notice the plate number, its around ten years old). People rarely use their Ford Expeditions, hence their tires will expire first before it wears out. Expired tires will crack and may explode/burst even in normal use conditions.

Yup, 6 years is the ideal useful life of a tire, used occasionally or everyday nagagamit.

4 survivors, puro Quilang ang surname...What is the expiration date of a tire? Would visual inspection for cracks be enough? My 2005 ride is still running on it's original tires.

Check the manufacturing date by look at it's code.

Example "K07r2404"... the last four digits is the actual manufcturing date: 24th week of 2004.

Some sites say tires should be replaced after SIX years.

That's June 2004, change your tires. The expiration is 5 years.

Check the sidewall. Look for a set of numbers like what Ghosthunter posted. It's the last 4 digits. Or on my tires it's just 4 digits without any other code. Mine is 3608. Which means 36th week of 2008.

too early to blame the tires until a comprehensive investigation of road condition, vehicle speed, vehicle condition ( wheel alignment, suspension system condition) whichever happened first should be the deciding factor. most probably tire number four (the right rear tire- judging from the description) was the tire that blew up. did it blow up after impact with the railing or did it explode causing the vehicle to hit the railing and roll over? study the skid marks, point of impact, severity of the impact, the distance from point of impact to the vehicle's last position. before the full qualified traffic accident investigation by qualified personnel is done, everything else is hearsay and speculation
