The current gen Focus should already be updated, according to local reviews it's an improvement over the one in the old Fiesta Powershift, but supposedly it still isn't as smooth as the "less fuel efficient" torque converter automatics used by most of its competitors.
If you read owner's feedback from America, it might sound a bit more exaggerated because many of them are not accustomed to how a manual transmission shifts, most of them are familiar with the torque converter automatics.
If you want smoother shifting with your Powershift transmission, I guess you can always use the +/- manual mode.
I'm assuming you did not test drive the car. You should test drive the car first before you decide to backout.
I'd recommend a manual transmission, but the only New Focus with a manual transmission is the Ambiente which has steel wheels with covers and no additional features like the voice activated Microsoft SYNC system, steering wheel mounted controls and front fog lights.
PS: The Lancer EX is near the end of its model cycle, its replacement might be unveiled or previewed (maybe as a concept) next year.
