This is why Japanese brands like Honda and Toyota will still be top choices.
People buying TOTL compacts aren't exactly the type to be stingy about gas expenses. Compared to the Altis 2.0V, Civic 2.0 EL, Impreza 2.0i, Sentra 200, and Mazda 3 2.0R, the Focus Sport+ offers the most bang for the buck. Notwithstanding the novelty auto parking and city stop features, it still offers everything that the most loaded of compacts have. It's still close to 200k cheaper than a Sonata GLS, which it has more features than.

Or even just the Lancer EX GTA which is in the same car category and still cheaper than the Focus by around P100K.

Just saying, for the same money (or adding a little bit more), you can get either a bigger better vehicle.

The Ford Focus is NOT comparable to euro-brands because it was meant to compare primarily to the Honda Civic in size and buying market.
Not everyone wants a raised hatchback like yours. I could do well without the higher ground clearance in exchange for the more powerful engine, much better interior, more features, and better handling. 75k cheaper too.

Point is, the TOTL compacts have its advantages over entry/mid level CUVs, and depending on the buyer's preferences, can be better value for money as well.

... er... actually they still are stingy on fuel expenses as seen by how popular the car fuel economy threads are.

My ASX handles and goes just as well or better than many of the cars on the road.

Of course, that's if you have the extra P59K to spend, if not, the older discounted GT-A seems to be a good alternative. :D

I know, this was in response to your comment "The Ford Focus is NOT comparable to euro-brands", it happens to be one of the cars other Euro brands actually benchmark.
yup, even a forumer here 'numbah5' as i read in one thread is considering a Focus to replace their Volvo S40. :D

Yet an ASX or any other gas fed CUV isn't any better than a gas fed sedan. Diesel fed CUVs on the other hand are at least 1.3M, and the price difference with TOTL compacts would take around 3-5 years to recoup.

Of course it does, no one said it didn't. Same with the XV and the CX-5. Really great handling CUVs, better than wafty cars such as the Altis. Not better than great handling sedans like the Mazda 3 though, and most likely the Focus (if its cousin the Mz3 is any indication). CUVs just have higher centers of gravity and ceteris paribus, will struggle slightly more on corners than sedans. It's a trade off for the higher ride height.

And the argument for compacts over CUVs doesn't just concern handling. There's still price, features, and depending on what you're comparing, space (because some CUVs have less cargo room than a Jazz, while others don't have any more rear passenger space than a compact).
