my guess, is that americans simply "drive faster". hence gadgetry to improve high speed capability.
but this is just a wild guess.

American interstates have speed limits between 65 to 75 mph but most Americans drive 10-20% over the limit depending on the state. If you drive slow on the interstate, you will piss off a lot of motorists and you will be issued a traffic ticket if you are doing way below the limit (like doing 50mph on a 65mph interstate).

Here are the comparative torque and power curves for the 2.0 Bi-Turbo and the old 3.2L diesel engine.

The Raptor's torque develops early and exceeds 450 N-M just before 1500 rpm and stays above 450 N-M until a bit past 3000 rpm. Beyond that, it maintains at least 375 N-M until about 3800 pm. That's a lot of pulling potential across a wide rpm band, starting at 1500 rpm where fuel economy is optimal.

glad to see the tuning profile. that's a lot of torque upfront at lower rpm. power delivery is good too peaking at 3800 rpm. with 10spd AT i doubt if you reach that engine speed.

Yup. At 100 kph the engine runs at around 1750 and 1500 rpm for 9th and 10th gear, respectively. If we assume that the gearing ratio is separated linearly by 250 rpm, 100 kph in 7th gear should be around 2250 rpm. By ratio and proportion, 7th gear should be reaching nearly 170 kph at 3800 rpm.

Not very sure where overdrive starts, but I'd guess that the Raptor's highest top speed will be attained either in 7th or 8th gear, at around 3800-3900 rpm. The 9th and 10th are certainly overdrive and are just there for fuel economy, not for performance.

Sequential bi-turbo setup should offer more boost at a wider rpm range. Specially if it's a small displacement engine. Even if it's a VGT if it's a single turbo you still have to compromise. A smaller turbo for more response at lower rpms, a medium sized one for good mid range or a big one good for the top end.

What's good about the small displacement turbo engines is the weight reduction up front. It gives the car the potential to brake and handle a lot better. Fuel consumption is a lot better in the city too.

Just a short update - I've clocked over 1,200 km now, and with the Raptor broken in, I've started to use the Sport mode more often. Responsiveness of power and torque delivery at this TMS setting is nothing short of amazing, a night and day difference compared to the Normal mode. The AT in S mode keeps the RPMs in the range of about almost 2000 to nearly 4000, the sweet spot for both torque and power.

It's fun to accelerate hard in this TMS setting after going through a tollway booth and I see an SUV, pickup or car flooring its pedal. The Raptor leaves a lot of them behind, at least until 100 kph when I've to slow down to keep things legal.

Meanwhile, the tires are surprisingly quiet when cruising at 100 kph on pavement. NVH is so low at this speed, and coupled with the smoothness of the suspension, I usually get sleepy during cruise control.

Last Sunday morning, I was in cruise control at a steady 100 kph (GPS speed) along the slow lane of TPLEX on my way to Subic. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed in the rear view mirror a current model Hilux coming up behind me at a fast clip. He was in the fast lane and probably doing about 130 - 140 kph. When he got abreast of my Raptor, he braked and kept running at my speed for about a minute.

I glanced to my left, wondering why he didn't overtake me. I saw through his light tint that the driver and front passenger are staring at my car. They're probably doing the same thing you did - examining the new beast as it was cruising on the tollway. I smiled and waved at them, they smiled back then overtook me, their curiosity presumably satisfied.

I have seen a couple of Ranger Raptors within BGC and BF Homes Paranaque. It looks much better than the usual crop of pickups on the road. I like the one in blue color. It looks good but not really wowed by its presence.

I have seen though an F150 Raptor in Angeles and that is one mean-looking pickup truck. Tulo laway ko! If you ask me, I would be happy taking home even the standard F150 3.5L V6 Ecoboost.

The Ranger Raptor is a beast I'd like to have but I can imagine it would be painful to use around the tight roads that is NCR. One can only dream.

Keep us posted Mr Concretologist, we'd like to hear more of your adventures with her (the Raptor, of course).
