The Explorer will be replaced by an all-new model.
It will use a modified version of the platform currently used by the Taurus/MKS and Flex/MKT.
All-new 2011 Ford Explorer
One of the possible engines that will be made available in the next Explorer is the new 2.0 liter EcoBoost which should produce over 230hp.
This powerplant can be tuned up to an estimated 275hp.

The only Expedition sold here now is the extended EL.
It would be more expensive because its standard engine is a 265hp 3.5 liter V6, its also bigger than the CX-7.
The Ford Edge (CD3 platform) is actually closely related to the CX-9, think of it as its 5-seater short wheelbase brother.
I read that the smaller CX-7 is closely related to the Mazda MPV with components from the Mazda 5 & 6.
