Why cyanide is suspected in milk tea poisoning

    04/15/2015 12:44 AM ABS-CBNnews.com

MANILA - Sample of milk tea that caused the deaths of two people in Manila last week has tested negative for toxic substances, but the president of the Philippine College of Physicians believes the sample examined could not have been enough.

Dr. Anthony Leachon's statement comes following the Department of Health's (DOH) release of the preliminary findings of toxicologists which revealed that the sample from Ergo Cha Milk Tea House was negative for either cyanide, nitrite, nitrate, or arsenic.

"Ang pinagtataka natin not even substances na ganun katapang, wala kang nakuha," Leachon said in an interview on radio dzMM Tuesday, noting that Ergo Cha owner William Abrigo and his customer Suzaine Dagohoy died just hours after consuming the milk tea.

"So ang dine-deduce is that maaaring hindi enough yung samples na naipadala para makagawa ng mga test para doon, kaya negative yun. Hindi pumalo sa metro. So ibig sabihin kung kulang yung samples mo at diluted ka na, hindi mo talaga makukuha yung substances na yun," he said.

Dagohoy and her boyfriend, Arnold Aydalla, ordered a drink at the Ergo Cha Milk Tea House along Bustillos Street in Sampaloc, Manila last Thursday morning.

    They complained that their
drink, which was prepared by Abrigo himself, tasted different, prompting the tea house owner to also take a sip.

A few minutes later, Dagohoy vomited and collapsed. Aydalla also felt dizzy and his limbs stiffened.

They were immediately brought to the hospital, but hours later, Dagohoy passed away. The owner died as well and only Aydalla survived.

According to Leachon, the toxic substance that can cause immediate death, as what happened in the cases of Dagohoy and Abrigo, is cyanide.

"Sa bilis niyan... actually dapat makita mo parang cyanide yan sa bilis eh," he said.

"Based dun sa symptoms, iyung toxic substance na yun pumunta sa tiyan and then after that pumunta sa circulatory system, inatake agad ang heart para hindi magbigay ng oxygen to the brain, and it then attacked the respiratory center... kaya respiratory failure kaagad."

He said if indeed cyanide, which is a substance used in military warfare, was the one that caused the milk tea poisoning, there should be an investigation as to how and why Ergo Cha had it.

"Bilang clinician, iniisip mo bakit meron dun sa shop na yun?" he said.

He said authorities should investigate whether the poisoning was a criminal act, so as not to create panic and scare among the public, noting that several milk tea establishments have already been affected due to the incident.

I stopped drinking milk tea too. I assume that the powder came from China? I would not risk it, as mentioned, you would not know which batch has poison.

its safe to get it from branded bubble tea houses. huwag yun mga independent tea houses...baka kung saan saan lang nila kinukuha yun raw material nila. nakikiuso lang mg ayan

Puro galing China.

I already told my officemates hindi na ko sasama sa Cha Time or Serenitea.

afaik, focus of the investigation is on the "foul smelling liquid" that the owner's son may have brought to the store. Parang me ginamit na lalagyan with the foul smell na pinahugas ng owner, which got used in making the milk tea.

Yan din unang suspetsa ko, i.e. something wrong with the milk tea powder. But if that were true:

    - there would be other deaths at other shops that bought from the same source
    - banned food additives(magic sugar, melamine) typically don't act that fast, i.e. they kill you slowly. Usually you'd have nausea, vomitting, etc., but you wouldn't drop dead in minutes. It would take a really strong poison, something that is totally not being used in the food business

Re China: imho there really is a chronic problem with food safety. Remember the melamine issue? afaik the stock that got confiscated got sold again after the scandal died down. So there's really something wrong with the way the government works there(parang dito). i'm very hesitant to buy food made in China, even tea.

Re Taiwan: yes they do have food scandals, but the good thing is that their media seems honest, talagang binubulgar. In China, mismong government pa mag cover up.

The next day, sabi ng DOH & FDA, they face a blank wall and cannot find any source of poisonous substance.
