hahaha natawa ako dito but yeah we have computations sa pagdetermine ng shelf life ng food..we keep a sample of each batch and periodically we check it for any changes sa taste, smell, appearance etc..

Notice that for most of these products, they have an indication about how it should be stored. Ex. Store at room temperature, or refrigerated, or away from direct sunlight, etc. They can accelerate the spoilage process by subjecting it to different temps and use the results to approximate the expiration date based on how a consumer typically store the product or base it under the assumption that the consumer followed the instruction on the proper way to store the product.

Simply put, they can't wait three or five years to determine how their product would turn out. They may still do this method but only AFTER the product has been out on the market for maybe months/years. They would then use these results to adjust the dates on the new batches accordingly.
Same procedure with pharma. We have what we call stability test (two types: real-time and accelerated).

In real-time stability test, a product is stored at the recommended storage conditions and monitored (1st, 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th, 24th, 36th month, etc.) until it fails the specs (usually sa bioavailability/ potency specs).

While in accelerated, the product is stored at elevated stressed conditions (temp, humidity, presence of light, pH). Usually the duration of this test is 6 months. So dito pa lang sa accelerated madali na lang ma-predict yung shelf-life based on the degradation rate.

    BEST BEFORE DATES:

dito sa Saudi, almost lahat ng edible products e may "best before" or "expiration date" na nakalagay, it's their law I think. even eggs, printed on the shell. as well as mineral/distilled water may best before! (so napapanis yata ang tubig hehe!)...ang wala lang na pagkain na meron nito e yung fresh products like meat, fruits and veggies...kung baga e di na kailangan ng best before nito dahil madaling makita at maamoy kung pwede pa.

BEST BEFORE DATE : dates put on products for your "PEACE of MIND"

ok this is from experience since i was working before sa isang supermarket chain..a certain company will give their products at an even lower rate than what they're giving us mainly because the expiry date is in 2 mos na..normally there are bundles like 5 boxes of this item you will get 2 boxes of this item..there are these "wholesalers" who by the way knows the promo before we do get it from us and then deliver it to divisoria ata..then if you're familiar with the tingi na coffee, creamer etc i think yan yun..seen it sa imbestigador that there are some stores in divi that tamper the expiration dates on the product itself..oh well

I once witnessed tampering/erasure of BBD marks on Ovaltine products at the wet market entrance of Divisoria Mall. They do this in full view of people.

Big bottles of acetone & bulak ang gamit.

Worst, may mga bumibili nung ovaltine, dun din sa lugar na punas- bura ng BBD, at a much lower price.

It is a guide to the efficacy of the product.

A little extension would not hurt.

Bottomline,- use your common sense, which sadly is not common nowadays.

rule ko diyan before is if 5 months before and slow moving yung item report it to merchandising for disposition..either they ask the supplier to pull out the stocks or do some in store promotions like bundling or b1t1 scheme..kasi it consumes space sa shelves plus sa warehouse instead na makapagdisplay ng fast moving items..normally yung naiiwan sa selling area na expired items kasalanan na ng merchandiser yun kasi hindi sinusunod yung first in first out..normally if may nahuhuli akong ganyan if first time and di critical yung products like milk or tomato sauce etc suspension lang then next time termination na..supervisors are issued memo as well kasi di nila namonitor yung movement ng stocks..
