this lady has been declared brain-dead and has remained in a coma for 15 years. her husband has finally been allowed to remove her feeding tube to allow her to finally die, but her parents are fighting to get it put back in. some Republicans in US Congress has even gotten involved and are trying to pass a bill to outlaw this type of 'mercy killing'.

EDIT: hindi pala in a coma siya...she can breathe on her own and reacts to stimulus, but supposedly has no higher mental functions. maybe that's why it's so controversial...mukha pa kasi siyang may malay eh

the question: would you ever end it for a loved one - parent, sibling, spouse, or child? is it preferable for them to be gone forever than lingering in a comatose state for years (and maybe forever)?

Ang hirap naman. I remember in my religion class in high school, mercy killing is only allowed by the Church if the person is clinically dead. Ang naalala ko sa kuwento ay nasagasaan ang bata ng truck tapos nabubuhay lang siya dahil sa respirator, medicines... ika nga can't live without them. Coma pa. Inubos ng family resources nila pero nung wala na talaga naghingi na sila ng permission sa Church para ma pull na ang plug.

The best thing to ask yourselves is, "does that person want to die because he/she is suffering or does this person want ANY chance given to be on this earth". Now if the person haven't mentioned anything before the accident (wishes), then this would even be more difficult. You must again think of this persons personality, abilities, wants/needs, and from your point of view decide on his/her fate.

I agree. It'll be best if you could evaluate the persons abilities. Like say, if the persons was a fighter. Then of course, don't pull the plug. Keep on talking to the person since he/she is capable of breathing on his/her own and is responding to stimuli (meaning probably hearing is not impaired). There is always a .000000000001% of coming back.

if the patient is suffering for so long why prolong the agony, usual discussion of relatives, friends...
1. sayang baka pwede pang mabuhay
2. andami pa niyang pwedeng gawin
3. masaya siguro pag andito pa siya kasama natin
for me, if the patient is suffering so much let him go, maybe he had served gods time enough and prolonging his agony never feels any better, he who is bed ridden is not happy with himself,people around him may feel happy that he is still alive but dont other people understand the pain the patient has top go through to survive?uin shprt ala na siyang pwedeng gawin if he lives in machine alone,we could still be with our love one in memory and sincere prayers. para sa akin pahirap lang yun pipilitin kang mabuhay when its ove and its time to go, kasi di din madali yun me nakakabit nalang sayo para mabuhay... if a love one is in the hosp dying, maybe the best it could do is help unite the family and from there the family should reallu unite not only in the presence of a dying relative but unite with all heart=)
