Nagawa ko na po kasi ito once, when I tried to help a friend whose battery was drained!

So I started my car, and removed the battery (to start hers) and the engine kept running.

It worked well without problem, pero I don't get the principle behind it!

I used to think na kasi once the engine is running, yung alternator na yung nag-susupply ng voltage sa ignition coil (so on).

But I'm not convinced and it still is a mystery to me.

    Can someone please englighten this?

    Thanks

You are correct. Because the battery is a storage device. But once started, the alternator can make enough juice to keep the car running. About the only things that won't work are those things directly wired to your battery (e.g. amplifiers, upgraded horns, etc.).

+1, did this as well before. But better use a jump start cable na lang sana.

Pwede ba yan sa gas engine? Akala ko sa diesel lang pwede ito.

Pwede naman sa gas. Did it to an Accord. Emergency kasi and I didn't have my gear with me.

Wala po kaming pang-jumpstart eh hindi na din po namin nakuha sa tulak kasi ayaw talaga dahil wala ng crank.

Yep, wala po akong sounds and horns nun!

    Pero buti gumana yung lights.

    Thanks for the inputs!

yung conventional wisdom na to test if an alternator is good by removing the cable ay old wives' tale na kung matawag...bakit? kasi, aside from its primary function of providing enough power for starting (and sometimes operating other loads), the battery also serve as a buffer. because the alternator can produce voltage as high as 150 volts which can fry other electrical components/circuits. once you remove the battery cable while running, there is a big possibility of some circuits getting fried especially on new computer controlled cars today....

pwede sa mga purely mechanical diesels....mga walang solenoid valve sa injection pump...4ba1, c-190 and so on....

    both gas and diesel, pwede...

the only problem is you might blew the vehicles' electronic parts like ecu... likewise, the IC or the regulator inside the alternator will be in danger too...

yes, sa bagong alternator, nasa loob na yung IC (integrated circuit, consisting of diodes) which serves as ripple/voltage regulator...

don sa luma, ang regulator yung nasa labas na usually nasa square box consisting of two coils para ma regulate yung volatage and current in charging the battery..

    +10 to paps phezthie
eto din advise sakin ng mekaniko... this can be done once in a blue moon to diagnose the integrity of alternator if its failing or not... running the car without a battery especially for longer hours is a big no-no it will fry your circuitry

    ^^ a logical solution/answer to the query...

Running car without battery after starting
