Have your fuel / delivery system (such as the injection pump, injectors and emission control systems) also checked. Black smoke is a sign of poor combustion, unburnt fuel or very rich mixture. Poor Combustion also reduces the engine's power, that's why your tendency is to press the accelerator hard, thus causing black smoke.
