there are 2 kinds of usual overahaul, major overhaul and minor overhaul. minor overhaul usually, the engine is not pulled out of the engine bay and only the cylinder head is taken out for inspection for parts to be replace or just recondition. also piston are pulled out and piston rings are only replaced. sometimes connecting rod bearing and main bearing is also replace or just re-installed again if still on its specifications.

major overhaul on the other hand, the whole engine is pulled out of the engine. a complete major overhaul usually replace all worn parts of the engine like piston ring, liner, valve, valve seat, valve guide, connecting rod bearing main bearing, all gasket or so called overhauling gasket set.

other mechanic just replace the piston rings, and if the cylinder liner is worn they just inverted it. others usually replace main bearings and use the old con bearings or replace con rod bearings and use old main bearings. others just grind the valves.

a complete replacements of all internal worn parts of the engine makes it a good overhaul and the engine good as new and ready for another brake-in.
