If your car's owner's manual say the recommended viscosity is

    10w30 or 10w40 ..

What happens if you use 5w30 or 5w40 ??

Is 5w30 too thin for a 20 yr old car ?? Corolla GLi 4afe ..

Currently using Mobil 10w40 ... Last year was using vTec LEV 10w30 ..

You should be ok with a 5W or 10W40 oil.

If 10w30 is in your owner's manual then 5w30 or 0w30 is also ok. What's important is the "30".

Personally... and it's just my opinion... a 20 y/o vehicle will probably be better off with a 5W-xx or 10W-xx. Reason being, the engine might actually benefit from a relatively thicker oil at cold start because part tolerances have presumably loosened up enough that an 0W oil may no longer provide enough initial protection.

Note also that motor oil takes a lot more time to warm up and reach the target viscosity. By comparison, the coolant temperature warms up significantly faster thanks to the thermostat valve, which can reach operating temp in about 5 minutes. Motor oil, however, could take anywhere around 15-20 minutes to reach normal operating temp. In other words, the oil might stay in the lower end of the viscosity range far longer than necessary.

    Anyway, I'm just splitting hairs.

hardly any difference at 40C for 5w30 and 0w40, 72.8 and 75 cSt respectively

Don't have the manual when I bought it 2nd hand .. But I googled the 4afe engines used in Corollas abroad and it stated that the recommended viscosity is 10w30 or 10w40 ...

But those viscosities are from other countries, I don't know if its applicable here in the philippines tropical climate ...

Unlike your Honda, it is really widely known that 10w30 is the recommended oil viscosity ...

why is the helix ultra thick ??

I'm thinking of helix hx7 5w30 ss to compare with havoline ss ..

why is havoline not long life ??

the reason why I want to try 5w30 is because my usage is frequent stop & go .. turn on the car in the morning, go to the office and turn off the car .. during lunch time, turn on the car, drive the car after a minute of starting it ... most of the time after I ran the car slowly after 30sec to 1min of cold start and I want the oil to circulate faster ..

I just want to make sure that i wont damage my 4afe engine by running 5w30 on it .. some say that an oil too thin will not circulate properly on some engine ...

If I were you, I'd use 40 instead of 30. The number beside "W" doesnt matter in our country, AFAIK.

I would also go for 40 in your case where the car is 20YO. 5w or 10w I believe would not matter unless you live in baguio between the months of dec to feb when the temperature go below 10c. . .and only 'sometimes'

    Why 30 ???

Is it not advisable in our country ?? why does honda and vios recommend 5w30 in their manual ??

4afe in pakistan, miami, arizona etc all use 10w30 ..

5w30s in general are thinner oils than 10w40s and should save you a bit of fuel due to the lower friction in the engine. The better fuel economy is of course either something car makers try to shoot for with every improvement in the car OR something government should be imposing on car makers over time.

And yes I've seen cars on 10w30 in cali arizona and florida running all year no problem.
