When interpreting the recommended oil viscosity do not overlook the "OR BETTER" clause

In 2009 40 is a good and recommended viscosity for the engine then, fastforward to present time 20 is most definitely better than 40 in terms of friction reduction.

Hence, an old engine will have no adverse effect using the latest and better oil

The only bad thing about old engine is, if it is leaking oil, then thin oil such as 20 will drain much faster than a thick oil like 40

but what does "or better" mean, oil viscosity-wise?
either it's too light, or too heavy, or just right.

Thin oil is always better than thick oil

Oil thickens under extreme weather condition such as winter freeze. The engine wont start because the oil turned solid from liquid state

If you know how to swim in a pool?

ask yourself, which is swimmable a pool with water that turned into ice or pool filled with arnibal or plain water?

That is the reason why research and development of engine oil leads to producing thin oils

You're confusing oil viscosity with API category. You should only use the correct viscosity that is designed for your vehicle. But when it comes to API category, you can use no lower than what the engine manufacturer states in the spec.

So if your vehicle is designed to use API SM oil, you can safely use SN oil, but not SL, SJ or earlier oils.

Im not, as far as your Srating interpretation is concerned its correct SN is better than SL. If thats what you prefer to focus on

The OR BETTER clause simply means that mechanical designers took into consideration developments in the oil industry in the future. That better oils will come up in the future

In the future oil with viscosity 10 is better than what we have now and oil rated SZ will be better than SN rated oil we have now

Always remember that the primary job of an engine oil is to REDUCE FRICTION or lower the temperature caused by it because the number one enemy of your engine is HEAT. Engines are made of metal, too much heat melts metal, once you reach the melting point of most engine metals such as iron or aluminum then the cylinder block will meld with the piston head and thats the end of the engine of your car

Dust is taken cared of the air filter, not by the engine oil

Prolonged combustion of fuel heat is taken cared of the liquid COOLANT going around the engine and the radiator, not by the engine oil

So if you have an old engine and your not sure what is the recommended oil for it then its always safe to use the latest oil. Just check the bottom of an old engine and check if its leaking oil, thin oil will drain much faster than a thick oil. Lose oil thru leak and your engine will overheat

The latest oil are the thin oils rated 30 or 20 and SN or CJ

Take note in the future these ratings will be updated due to ongoing research and development of engine oils

Again latest (30, 20 or SN, CJ) oil is safe for old and new engines. Stale (50, 40 or CF, SL) oil is not good for new engines. Hence, you can never go wrong with novel engine oils

^ durablend oil, the one from valvoline? Nothing spectacular.

You can get away with any branded oil just change it regularly

durablend is like most semi synthetics. shell helix hx7(this is offeres in 10w40 grade only)or castrol magnatecs(10w30 10w40 grades are available in my area)

5w30 or 10w40 marami naman talaga multigrades available. baka out of stock lng ang 5w30.

I would prefer same viscosity with the current engine oil(xw30). the 10w40 will make your quieter but the fc will be slightly affected.

zic x7 meron 10w30. contact crazy_boy he probably carries the right filter too.

ah i thought you used 5w30 before. they probably used a mineral oil with xw40. Its cheaper after all.

protection is almost the same whether xw30 or xw40. both viscosities provide that film between metal to metal. the xw40 can withstand more heat generated by the engine when driving like a mad man.
