You were right sir. I did replaced the SAE 140, API GL-4 gear oil I originally placed in my two differentials and replaced it with Castrol SAE 90, GL-5 sa casa. Thanks.

    Sir Ungas,

I recall sir that the Petron SAE 90 gear oil from most of it's stations are API GL-4. Though I know they do sell API GL-5 oils based from their website I'm not sure if it's available in most stations.

    Ungas,
If Petron's Sae90 is a GL4 gear oil then ok lang but i'd check to confirm.
Have you tried isolating the noise in the diffs? Raise the front, transfer on neutral, lock the frt hubs and try spinning the wheels thru the front prop shaft. Then try it on the rear diff by turning rear prop shaft(hand brake off). If noise does not appear then it may be transfer or transmission.

    Roydok,
Glad that helped and think Sae90 is better for the strada's diffs. What about the tranny, does it need a GL4 or5?

    Sir jackaroo,

Sir the Strada tranny requires SAE 90 and API GL-4. I did not replace it with GL-5 sa casa since it's already GL-4. Thanks again sir.

I never really tried to isolate the sound. I will as soon as I visit chieffy's station.

I think it will be harder to shift on oil 140 compared to 90

I also used 140 GL-5 sa rear diff of my Feroza. Kasi I can't find a 90 GL-5. It was either mas malapot (140 GL-5) or less lubricating properties (90 GL-4). I put Shell Spirax Axle oil, GL-5. I had to DIY since Shell does not want to put it themselves Most gas stations only have GL-4 rating grear only, sabi sa akin dati mayroon daw sila pero konti lang nagpaservice na trucks. Good only for cars and trannys. Once I find a 90 GL-5 I will replace it again.

jkyamog: I changed my rear differential oil a few days ago to Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear oil 75w90. So far so good. P700/quart sa True Value Rockwell.

There's Mobilube HD90, GL5 at P95/L if bought by box of 6x4L. You'll have to pool a group of friends to finish 24L!

Magtatanong na rin po regarding gear/trans oil. Ilan liters kaya aabutin para sa pajero? And saan mas ok mag pa change ng trans. and gear oil? Shell, caltex or petron?

Wow wiretap that looks very expensive. Will look for mineral based oils na lang. Caltex site does show they have 90 GL5, lets see how it goes.

Yup, its a bit expensive pero take note na its synthetic. Now that I have it in my rear differential, I notice a smoother run as compared to before. If I have the funds, I'll replace my tranny and transfercase oil as well kahit na the minimum rating for it is GL-4 lang.

    wiretap,

Don't put GL5 oils on GL4 equipment such as tranny and transfer case. It will eat up the gears, GL5 has additives not good for soft metals such the ones used for tranny and transfer case. Look for synthetic GL4 gear oil.

Really? Hmmm... kasi I was consulting my Chilton Manual here for my rig and it said na my transfer case and transmission can use GL-4 oils or better. So this means na pwede GL-5? Pero yung sa front and rear axles, specified talaga na GL-5 dapat.

    Hi wiretap.

See my post here that links to Shell site, 2nd to the last post. I have also read about this on other sites too.

BTW since your Suzuki said "or higher" it maybe ok. Pero if I where in your place, I would play it safe and use GL4. Based from what I have seen on your posts in tsikot and other sites, I bet you will go for GL4 synthetic.

There's Redline synthetic MT-90 which is a 75w90, GL4 designed for manual trans. Don't know current price now.

oh no! anyone experienced this already?

i put mobil 1 fullsynt (75-90w), GL5 rated gear oil in my gen 1 pajero's tranny and transfer case. although the owners manual states "GL4 or better".

what do you guys think? should i stick with the mobil 1 or replace it with a GL4 rated gear oil.

    thanks!

    Hi paj4x4,

It really depends on the metals used in your tranny and tcase. What I said is not a rule, etc. It really depends. Try to read around for this or look at the shell link in my DCP post. Also I don't think its going to eat the gears instantly. If you want to be in the safe side on your next gear oil change use GL4 synth or mineral.

    jkyamog,

thanks for the info. i'll look into your post in the Shell site.

any good synthetic GL4 gear oil (hyphoid) available here? i usually get my oils/lubricants from the US and my next trip is not until summer next year.

i've looked around in the past and i've only come across mobil 1 fully synthetic gear oil (75-90w)...and the price is terribly high at around P650-700 per quart. i get this from the US at less than half the price. how about castrol hypoy 90w? is it a good brand and GL4 rated?

    thanks!
