Why is driving in the city consume more gas.. than driving a long drive...

if sa city ka you consume more gas with less mileage..
while in long drive you consume less gas but more mileage..


what is the explanation?

naka idle kasi most of the time pag city driving ang tsikot mo sir lalo na pag traffic tska ang speed mo nasa 60kph more or less lang. Unlike sa long drive na constant 80-100kph which is the somewhat ideal speed for your FC. just my 2 cents....

City Driving

On a stop and go traffic. you are mostly on the first and second gear only.... high gear means high fuel consumption.

Long Drive

The opposite of city driving.... you are mostly on the 5th gear. low gear is equivalent to lower fuel consumption.

In stop and go traffic, one needs to use low gears to accelerate your vehicle. Usually, you would go over 3000rpm on first gear, 2500 on second gear then 2000 on third before you need to stop again. The distance travelled between traffic lghts is short and you would have consumed more fuel due to reaching higher RPMs.

When crusing on the highway, you can hit the sweet spot of 80kph * 2000rpm thus allowing you to cover more distance while not consuming as much fuel as in stop and go traffic.

it should be:

"in city driving, you get less gas mileage". OR "...you consume more gas (assuming same distance travelled), hence less mileage"

the same with the statement with long drive

The reason I mentioned this is to point out the cause and effect on gas consumption on mileage given the same distance travelled bet city and long drive.
Please correct me but it seems that you don't realize this.

it takes longer time to cover distance when driving in the city. ergo, the time the engine is running longer compared with driving the same distance in open roads, (hiway). thus, more fuel consumption. sa edsa, halos isang oras ang 5 kilometers samantalang sa probinsya, 5 minutes lang, dating ka na.

dapat ung FC natin plus 30-40% pa due to idling at heavy traffic.

Common on both scenario, the engine is consuming fuel

City Driving:
1. Engine is burning fuel
2. Due to traffic, most of the fuel is burned while not moving, hence no mileage to show
3. Engine use more fuel if on low gear,
3.1. imagine yourself using bicycle, from stop to move it takes you more effort to pedal as your gear is set to the lowest.


Hi-way driving:
1. Engine is burning fuel
2. as the fuel is burned, it is directly converted into mileage
3. as the car is already moving, and already in mid to high gear,
3.2. imagine yourself using a bicycle, but you are already moving, it takes less effort to pedal as you are only adding force to sustain the speed.
