    Hi Guys!

I recently bought Hyundai Getz 1.1 2010 (gas).
I'm only getting 10-11km/L traffic/highway mix. Bihira ako mag-aircon at madalas magfree wheeling pag-pwde
We have a toyota corolla xe (14yrs old car) 1.3 engine nya at halos same lang ng fuel consumption sa Getz ko. sobrang disappointed ako right now...
I'm not sure if I'm expecting a lot from this subcompact cars... madami ako nababasa normal consumption lang daw talaga ang 10-12km/L
I was expecting at least 15km/L.

    Any advice? comment? suggestion?

    Thanks Tsikoters! more power!

    i also own a 1.1 getz.
my average is just the same as yours, mixed city - highway.
my best so far was 15 kpl, pure highway, worst so far was around 9 kpl, pure city.

daming factors on FC eh.... like load, traffic conditions, etc.

    There are several reasons:

For one, older carbureted engines use no catalytic converter. This means no power-robbing restrictions on the exhaust and they can be tuned to run leaner at low rpms, which means better economy. Modern engines cannot run leaner than 14.7:1 because any leaner would cause excessive nitrous oxide emissions. One of the most economical cars of all time, the 1993 Civic VX, would be illegal nowadays because of nitrous emissions.

For another, the Corolla 1.3 (I assume this is the FX body?) actually weighs less than the Getz.(about 50-60 kilograms less) Less weight means better economy, no matter what engine is under the hood.

And then there's the aircon issue. Whatever the size of your engine, an aircon compressor takes some 15 horsepower to turn. For a big motor, 15 horsepower is nothing. For a small motor like the 1.1, it's a huge drag.

And lastly, the Getz has very long gearing. I have a suspicion the gearbox was designed to accomodate the full range of engine selections for the Getz, meaning it may be optimum for the 1.4 or diesel, but is too long for the 1.1. Second gear, in particular, feels waaay too long to be practical. If the gearing is too long, you tend to press down harder on the gas pedal to get going. Which uses more gas. And then fifth gear is too short. The Getz does almost 3k rpm at 100 km/h. Not good for highway economy.

That you're getting the same economy means it's doing decently enough, but it's never going to be as exceptional as something like a Suzuki Alto, which weighs nearly 200 kilograms less.

You can get 15 km/l from the Getz, but not in rush hour traffic. Probably 11 is the best it can do in pure city driving. The modern cars that get 13+ in traffic would be the Alto and Eon.

To save fuel with the Getz, make sure that it's in good condition. At least it uses a MAP sensor instead of the more fragile MAF, so that's not a worry. Change the oil, clean the air filter and check the timing. Make sure your tire pressures are correct (about 30-35 psi). drive with the AC thermostat set at a little warmer temperature, not full cold. And don't expect the same power as a 1.3 or 1.5 from the 1.1. Let it accelerate at its own pace, and stick to a strict 80 km/h limit on the highway. When we do 20+ km/l runs on the highway with cars like the Eon or the Focus TDCi, it's always at 80 km/h. If you want to see 20+ km/l from the Getz, get it out on the NLEX, and cruise down the entire length at about 2000-2200 rpm in 5th gear at 70 km/h.

When we tested the Getz Diesel, was vaguely disappointed that I was only doing 14 km/l. But then again, I was doing 140 km/h...

The Getz does almost 3k rpm at 100 km/h.

thanks Niks also for this info. Kala ko may problema transmission ko eh.... hehehehehe kaya pala.
but then again, since this is a small car, my average speed is only at 80-85 kph, at around 2.5k rpm.

basta all I know...

my old but reliable 17-year old kia cd5 still gives me 13 km/l on city driving and a very efficient 18-20km/l on hiway when cruising at 70kph. most of all, it's just 10% of the value of your new cars. downside? disregard beauty.

Obviously, the lower the rpm at a certain speed, the higher the fuel economy.

Some new cars do only 1500-2000 at 100 km//h.

May proof ako, so, binigyan ako ng 250php. :D

Pag malaki bawas, sisinggilin kita.

To add, usually, its those 2.0L cars and those w/ CVT or 6th gear transmission.
For 1.6L and below, its usually 2,800 rpm or higher at 100kph. Why? Need torque. :D
