Generally it would mean the car battery would have had it's original plates replaced. It would also mean the seal of the battery case to be broken which maybe a fire hazard. As for the battery life, that would be an unknown because the quality of the replacement plates is unknown. They may not withstand the vibration and heat in the engine bay. Some battery brand with 24 month rated life batteries don't even last 12 months in my car (hence I have shifted brands).
In my opinion, it would be better to replace the entire battery with discount by exchanging your old battery for the new one. Assuming the old battery also gets recycled, it should be just as green. Plus less headache if your "recycled" battery suddenly dies on you.
