I think the most significant sign would be that your car won't start at all.
Another sign is the check engine light on your cluster meter staying lit even after a few seconds or blinking after you switch the key over to ignition.
The first one is based on my experience while the latter is what I learned from an expert mechanic in Banawe.

1. No start is one of the possibility of ecu malfunction but dont jump into conclusion yet. There should be cranking when I said no start but always try to check other possibility before concluding that your ecu has the problem.

2. When your MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) on the gauge stay lighted all the time. How you can conclude that your ecu is broken. Check for OBD codes after you have corrected this codes and reset the MIL and after a few seconds the MIL when back again then you have an ecu problem.
