The Flying Cars Are Coming … To the New York Auto Show

    By Jason Paur

There’s a flying car coming to the New York International Auto Show this week. The Terrafugia Transition is a two-seat airplane with foldable wings, four wheels and turn signals. Over the past few years the Massachusetts company has called its creation a “roadable aircraft” and lately, a “street legal airplane.” But ahead of the Transition’s first appearance at an auto show, it’s perhaps more appropriate to simply call it what it is: a flying car.... Not quite accurate. The Terrafugia is more of a "road-legal airplane".

Let's face it... owners are not going to buy Terrafugias to commute every day by driving thirty kilometers to the nearest airport and flying over a hundred kilometers to work... they're going to buy it as a toy... an oddity. It's rubbish as a car, with all that bodywork hanging off the back of a subcompact carrying just two people.

This thing has been in development for years. Glad to see it's finally going commercial, but it's hard to see it becoming a widespread transport solution.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

currently too ambitious for civilian use but the concept realisation may play well with darpa's tactical flying suv project (see avx aircraft co).
they share basic idea even if some requirements/ applications differ

i think the flying car itself is an old news.. its test "flight" revived it.

    edit:

    eto rival niyan, PAL-V

PAL-V Flying Car makes first test flight

For nearly 100 years, people all over the world have imagined what it would be like if vehicles could fly. The Dutch PAL-V company has created a vehicle geared to turn your imagination into reality.
PAL-V announces the first series of test flights for their flying car, also named PAL-V, which stands for Personal Air and Land Vehicle, were successful.
The PAL-V conducted numerous test flights over the last two weeks at the Gilze Rijen Airport located in the Netherlands. Robert Dingemanse, PAL-V CEO and co-founder stated, "We have started the next phase already, from engineering prototypes to the market."
The PAL-V is a three-wheel gas-powered vehicle, but the company plans to create a biodiesel version of the vehicle as well. While traveling on the ground, the PAL-V can reach a speed of 110 miles per hour. The air speed matches the 110 mile per hour range and is driven by a rear propeller, performing as a gyrocopter, which is stabilized by an unpowered top rotor.
The PAL-V can fly a distance of 315 miles or drive 750 miles on land using one tank of gas. It takes around 540 feet of land, either grass or pavement, to take off and land the vehicle.
Government officials in the United States and Europe are currently preparing for an increase in air traffic through the use of PAL-Vs, and the company is currently using a government funded program to create the 'digital freeway' infrastructure design to provide safe traveling with the PAL-V through GPS technology.
PAL-V stated that 20 – 30 hours of practice is required to obtain a license to drive the new vehicle, which they plan to offer to customers around the world by 2014 for a price of $266,480.

You need to have driver's license and Pilot's license at the same time to operate that.
