Nobody was complaining about Ford’s Fox engine (1.0L turbo). It won many awards. It does have a big oil pan and uses around 4.5L of oil every change. That engine is tuned at 140hp/210Nm for EUDM use.
Honda’s 1.5L turbo engine is also quite versatile with variable tunes. The local Civic is at 174hp while it is tuned at 190hp for use with the USDM CRV and Accord. The new Civic Si has the same engine tuned at 200hp/260Nm.
The reason that most Chinese cars use 1.5L displacement is that their government offers incentives for small engines. VW is the biggest player there and it makes a lot of use of its 1.4L turbo engine. Other manufacturers also have to join the fray. Why make bigger engines when you can make do with ample power using a turbocharger?
Come to think of it, despite such maintenance requirements for 1.5L turbo gas engines, they are still cleaner in emissions compared to the usual Diesel engines.
