Chery, one of the many Chinese car brands that, among other things, are known for cloning the vehicles of other carmakers and then branding and selling these as their own, is now out to make a name for itself. Its solution? Hire former Porsche designer Hakan Saracoglu.

According to Europe.AutoNews.com, Saracoglu has been hired to head Chery's Shanghai-based design center "to improve the Chinese carmaker's styling."

"The company is redefining itself," Europe.AutoNews.com quoted Saracoglu as saying. "Chery is standing for value, for design and gaining customer confidence. That's where we want to go."

With Saracoglu, Chery is indeed in capable hands. In his 15 years at Porsche, Saracoglu had a hand in designing the exteriors of the Boxster, the Cayman and, more recently, the 918 Spyder.

Saracoglu reportedly joined Chery as its design director in October last year.

They need engineers more than designers to make their cars much more reliable.

aside from their efforts to improve, hiring a "respectable guy" from a known automotive company gives them some FACE value... that's marketing gimmick... like KIA did when they hired peter from audi...

imagine if Mr. Creativepinoy was hired by Chery... then chery announces that they hired the services of Mr. Creativepinoy to design their future products.. do you think it will have an appeal in the auto industry?? who's mr. creativepinoy anyway??? then people will say, chery hired another crap

Tignan niyo Kia, nung kinuha si Peter nagkaroon sila bigla nang sariling identity. Ganda kaya ng dating ng kotse nila ngayon.

It may take time but legitimacy and street creed in design would happen for these chinese car company. Somehow.

agree on this, they owned the qoros which a great effort already.. another wise move for their business after hiring top caliber designer is to hire german engineers (same thing as the strategy of hyundai-kia, well benchmarking as its) to improve their quality, technology and maybe reliablity which is they all need to deliver to prove their tenure they learned something from the Koreans, after this maybe they can also duplicate the success of the Korean auto brands. btw, chery also signed a joint venture with Jaguar Land Rover..
