This appears to be a rare, camo-free shot of the 2011 Chevy Cobalt replacement.

The yet-to-be-named compact would ride on the Delta platform and is expected to begin production at General Motors’ Lordstown, Ohio, plant in mid-2010. It’s likely to be revealed it at an auto show this fall.

This car reportedly gets 40 mpg, and with fuel prices soaring, it can’t get here soon enough.

The photos show that it will get what is becoming Chevy’s signature front grille, similar to that on the Malibu. It also has more aggressive headlamps and appears to be a bit larger than the current-generation Cobalt.

It’s being developed by GM’s South Korean unit, with considerable input from North America and Europe. In previous shots of the car, it appeared to wear an Opel badge and grille.

The car is likely to get a version of GM’s turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder global powerplant, adding fuel economy and performance. It will also come in coupe and sedan versions, with the coupe likely to have a sportier vibe.

Thanks for the Picture Post. The car looks very nice on the outside. Come to think of it, the inside looks nice, too except for one thing. In the last pic showing the driver seat, unless that seat has been pulled forward, it looks too cramped. Hopefully, GM won't do the same as what Toyota is doing. I am a big person and I like to drive in comfort ( which is why I prefer american to japanese ). Forget about fuel consumption. 10km/L is good enough for me. When you are my age, you don't give up comfort, you pay for it. Which is why I bought my 04. Very comfy.

With diesel gaining popularity worldwide due to advanced common rail technology manufacturers in India are scouting for diesel hearts for their Indian portfolio. The price difference between petrol & diesel in India is another factor for the growth of the diesel brigade. GM India which doesnt really have any diesel portfolio to speak of except the Tavera has begun dieselization of it's cars beginning with the launch of the Chevrolet Optra Magnum TDCi. The new Optra has a 2 litre turbocharged engine which produces 120 bhp and 28 kgm of torque making the Optra one hell of a scorcher. The closest rival to the Optra TDCi will be the Skoda Octavia which seems overpriced and underpowered at only 90 bhp on tap from it's 1.8 litre heart.
The diesel version also gets a new front end (see picture) which more closely resembles the Chevrolet Optra SRV. The ORVM's get turn indicators which is a nice touch. The interiors too have been spruced up and the new dashboard resembles that of the SRV. The diesel Optra will compete with the Skoda Octavia and the Hyundai Elantra. GM India has rolled out three variants of the Optra Magnum priced between Rs. 8.74 lakh to Rs. 9.99 lakh which seems like an attractive enough price for the package.

Expect the Cruze to get a new or updated diesel engine...
One of the engines the Cruze is expected to come with is the new 1.4 liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing between 120hp to 140hp and should be capable of 40MPG.

If that picture is the latest then that's the Chevy Cruze which will be unveiled at the Paris Auto show this coming October. It will replace the Cobalt. Nothing here says anything about it replacing other models but then since GM is saying that it will be produced everywhere then I guess it'll be in the Philippines also.
Another article has it that GM's plant in St. Peter'sburg, Russia will also produce the car.

Fuel-efficient compact car to replace Chevrolet Cobalt

The first Chevrolet built on a new global platform will be called the Cruze and get 45 miles per gallon, General Motors Corp. said Wednesday.
The compact car, which replaces the Chevy Cobalt, will be built around the world including at GM's Lordstown, Ohio, plant.
"This is one of the first global vehicles GM has talked about and it will be a Chevrolet Cruze no matter where it's sold," said Nancy Libby, a Chevrolet spokeswoman.

Chevrolet developed the name as a derivative of "cruise," Libby said, noting, that "it's something we think will work globally."
"It's primarily the same car, but there are small tweaks to meet local regulations," she said. "The grill might be changed because one is more familiar on European streets than in the U.S."
Built on what is being called GM's Delta 2 architecture -- the Cobalt and Pontiac G5, also made at Lordstown, are original Delta cars -- the Cruze first will go into production in Europe, with sales starting next spring.
United Auto Workers officials said they hope the vehicle will keep production going at the northeast Ohio plant for years to come.
"We can't wait to get it," said Dave Green, president of Local 1714 at the Lordstown plant.
Chevrolet's Cruze will be shown for the first time in October at the Paris Auto Show. It's set for production at Lordstown in the summer of 2010.
GM hasn't released many details about the Cruze.
It will be about 15 feet long, almost identical to the Cobalt. But GM said the Cruze will make better use of its interior, offering more room for five passengers and cargo.
The Cruze is one of GM's responses to $4-per-gallon gasoline.
The manual transmission model will boost fuel efficiency by 9 miles per gallon over the current Cobalt XFE, also a stick-shift model that can achieve 36 mpg, said Nick Daniels of GM's global product development.
In its short life since sales began in November 2004, the Cobalt has become GM's best-selling cars in recent months as buyers seek fuel-efficient vehicles.
Whether or when the Cobalt might cease production has yet to be determined, GM Lordstown spokesman Tom Mock said.

Chevy should change the name of the new upcoming coablt platform to Cruze as to differentiate it with the Optra which has gotten a bad reputation as a gas guzzler. Add in a diesel variant for this new model and chevy might get a nicer chunk of the compact car market.

They did. Chevy Cobalts are based on Delta platforms. This is the Original.
The Chevy Cruze will use the DELTA 2 platform. a newer version of the Original.
As for the Optra, like what AG4 said, this car was a transitional model. Meaning, before GM bought DAEWOO, the OPTRA ( a.k.a Daewoo Nubira/Daewoo Lacetti) had been concepted and was ready for production. When GM bought DAEWOO, GM decided to continue the production of the OPTRA and had it branded as Chevrolet (for Asian Markets), DAEWOO (for EUROPEAN Markets) and at that time SUZUKI FORENZA ( for US Markets ) up until that time when GM and SUZUKI parted ways.

As for being a gas guzzler, Its not far off from the CIVIC 1.8 or Mazda 3s.

We'll just have to wait and see if GM (USA) will sell the car in Asia, in particular, the Philippines. Remember, They had the Cobalt but did not sell it here or had it produced anywhere.
