What was your first job? Did you go corporate or straight into business? Are you still in that industry or has life taken you to a different path?

Reminisce the good old days of youth or give advice to the younger folks starting out.

To start - I took a job at a petroleum company after graduating college.

Fun job that brought me to different places around the country and introduced me to businessmen who helped widen my worldview to more than just corporate. Pay was pretty good relative to other companies and the perks were great.

Have since moved industries for a faster pace, more learning, and of course greener pastures.

Applied for an MT program for a local bank. Got bored kasi na assign ako sa branch sales. So i quit after 6 months.

It was fun though as i was able to meet customers face to face. Got rejected plenty of times. Hehe

Then applied again sa international bank, this time back office. Got bored after 2 years.

Then finally, my current job sa FMCG sector. Pretty dope if you ask me. Was offered to be expatriated after 6 months, so i grabbed the opportunity.

Didn't expect it to be this life changing. Hehe

My first job was in a 5 star hotel in Pasay near Coconut palace. I also had may practicum there. I worked there for 5 years.

After that I put up my own business then I became a full time instructor in my alma mater in Espaņa and I was part timer in another university in Morayta. Then, I gave up my business and now I am back in the industry and doing some part time teaching in my Alma mater.

I started as an entry level salesman in a fmcg distributor 20 years ago.

No car, no laptop. Just the good old manual DSR and jeeps and buses.

Moved to different companies in different industries. FMCG, IT, Consumer Electronics, Telco.

Retired in the corporate world 5 years ago.

As any kid of a fil-chi father with business, I started very young as a cashier in our store until I graduated college, travelled to different Barrios in the province to sell our goods just like a salesman, got lots of experience and good memories as that where I met my future wife hehehe, then we got hit by the 90's financial crunch, dad closed the store and dad retired and went back to China.

1999 I moved to Manila to look for work and worked at a ceramic factory as a trainee for supervisory position, very interesting job and lots of experiences also, worked there for almost 2 years until the factory closed due to labor strike.

While looking for a job, I joined MLM and that did not work well for me that I have to go to Bacolod and temporarily help my sis at their business but I have to find other job as the salary is not that big to feed my growing family.

I opened a turo-turo restaurant and business is ok but I can't stand the long hours and stress, waking up early and sleeping very late at night.

2003, Got an offer from my dad to work for him and my brother in China and I didn't hesitate that I flew to China right away as I need to feed my family, after a few month, my brother passed away due to illness and after a month or two after my brother died, I got into trouble with my step brother and his wife, they're trying to take over the business that they accused me of stealing, I have to give way as I came late into the business, after that, I started a new company in direct competition with my step brother, to make the very long story short, I won he lost, but it's not easy, I have to endure lot of hardship especially I'm not in my own turf and country, but eventually got there and kicked his a$$.

Your dad was not born here? It's unusual for fil-chi "to go home" to China.

Yup, actually my dad love the Philippines, dito na din siya lumaki, mas madami pa siyang napuntahan na lugar compare sa akin, umabot pa siya ng tawi-tawi daw during Marcos time, yun nga lang, after a few years after my mom died, he remarried to a TDK, she lived for a few year sa amin but we can't get along each other, away kami araw-araw, iba talaga ugali, so she went back to China and then binabalik-balikan lang siya ng dad ko, when my dad retired, he went to China sa stepmom ko.

I started to work on BPO as support sa isang sikat na computer brand for 3 years. Then i move to a local IT Integrator na client ay mga BPO offices din. after a few years, tried my luck abroad, and was fortunate enough to get a job quickly....

Worked as an IT engineer abroad with an online gaming company (back-end) na may office sa pinas , sa pbcom tower, pero once lang ako pinadala sa pinas to meet our IT team, hinde pa uso ang word na Pogo noon. then after a few years our company fold up, dami na trench ako nalang at it manager natira sa company kasi hinde nila kame masisante kasi hawak namen mga infrastructure. pero inunahan ko na, nag hanap na ako malipatan dahil mahirap masisante abroad pag hinde agad naka hanap ng malipatan balik ng pinas ng de oras.

Was able to find a job as system engineer on an online elearning company that caters online learning to local schools and schools in APAC. sounds cool, challenging and new experience to me, lots of technical experience gained, dahil local company siya at barat ang company, kame IT engineer lang titira ng mga new deployment, from planning to implementation. after spending 6 years there and i have my first child, i realize this type of job is very demanding for me na, i realize i need to spend more time with my wife and first daugther. mejo mahirap pa dahil nasa pinas sila, while ako sa abroad so i always go to pinas like 1 every 2 months. to the point na parang gusto ko na umuwi for good, pero since mejo bata pa ako parang sayang naman opportunity sa abroad, i tried to apply and got a less demanding job, as IT proj manager on a top oil and gas company. been in this company for 3 years na with my family.

next plan is to move back to pinas soon. pero hinde ko pa alam ano gawin ko. corporate pa din or yun matagal ko na pangarap, to be an entrepreneur.

iba pa din kasi sa pinas. kahit walang gano pera masaya naman with all your family, relatives and friends around you.

Started working while I was still in college. Helped with the family business (shellcraft) to earn my allowance. After graduation, hopped between small jobs (warehouse man, stock clerk, etc.) And finally got a stable job with a popular domestic shipping company owned by the Chiongbians. Worked for 5 years doing internal auditing, passed the CPA board exam and got a better offer from a foreign company. Worked for 17 years as a corporate slave until I got a call in 2009 from another US company, this time to start up a shared service center in BGC and since then and has grown the team to 100+ in the past 11 years. No complaints about the job and the pay....well, except for one thing...

Right after my graduation from the College of Engineering, and before I was 21yo, I was a "dignified" Instructor in the same Tough University in the College of Computer Studies... It was fun sharing my knowledge with students a few years younger and relating to more experienced Professors, while I reviewed for my board exam...

Cafeteria was "signed chit", and whenever I receive my monthly pay, it was barely enough for my gasoline and personal expenses, so I decided to move to the industry and never looked back.

Timely post, my friend and I are talking about my childhood BFF because she said that people work only because they HAVE to, not because they WANT to

Naalala ko lang sabi ni CVT na there is dignity in work, kinda stuck to me :P I am thankful and consider it a blessing to have a job that I truly love and bosses that appreciate and support me. I had to defend my job from my family when they wanted me to move to the US! So no, hindi lahat ng tao masaya ng umasa sa iba for money Sarap ng may sweldo and nobody can control you because you earn your own money.

Hindi ko na lang kinwento si crush who insists on working when he can just live off his Dad's company. Those are the type of people I admire.
