Proposed new taxes of 500K on imported used cars

although i would not consider a converted unit kasi takot ako, i would also not consider a brand new car kasi the second hand car market is such a goldmine, if you know how to choose. i might as well exploit it and get a better model.

take the P800,000 for the Adventure na brand new.

with 800,000 pesos, i would probably get a 1998 gen 2 pajero fieldmaster. yung stock leather seats na.

or maybe yung kay woodfire na gen 2 na naka 4m40 engine and full leather interior na.

i don't want to start anything, but in my opinion, i would choose that over a brand new adventure.

but i know that there are people who really want brand new, and since it is their money, then it is their decision. my brother is one of those people, that is why he chose the altis na brand new and ako naman 2nd hand na gen 2 pajero to each his own talaga

maybe we should research what australia, UK, and NZ do about this phenomenon. ang alam ko, marami din na mga JDM na pumapasok sa kanila. Although they don't need to convert na, but all other factors apply (junk na ito sa japan, pollution, etc)

bangaladesh is also heavily importing used JDM vehicles.

does anyone have the specifics about the automotive law in japan? specifically for the maintenance & longevity of vehicles.

AFAIK, the japs are really strict on this! cars should be maintained in pristine condition (no dents, etc) and the tax for old vehicles get bigger (to spurn the local auto industry).

you'd be amazed on how big the auto industry in japan is - considering the size of that country.

Ex-JDM cars are not entirely junk. It is just that the costs of vehicle repair and maintenance in a country like Japan makes getting a newer unit more viable than repairing the old one. And since new cars have low resale values over there, they are usually shipped out to other countries.

I just wish they were LHD, though.

mazdamazda i think japan has a population of 128milllion people with lots of money to spend. so they can pretty much get a new car whenever they want.

if i recall correctly the local car industry of New Zealand died after they let in surplus cars. it could happen here. i hope it doesnt though.

Instead of buying land (which is virtually nonexistent there), the Japanese spend money on other things like cars and high end electronics.

The main problem of secondhand japanese is safety. They do throw stuff away that can still be used, but RHD-LHD conversion is still a bit risky. I've only seen a few conversions that I trust.

Japan has this 3-5-7 rule... wherein your car must pass a major inspection in these years... the inspection costs a HELL of a lot, which is why most people sell by 5.

I think the problem is the vastly under-rated value of secondhand vehicles. If they were taxed based on their actual value here instead of their selling price there, it would more accurately reflect market price, and the flood would (hopefully) stop.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

magandang case study ang New Zealand na yan. i guess our saving grace is that not all people are comfortable driving converted units (kasama ako doon)

Converted vehicles - nice to look outside, but not inside.

Pano na 'yong mga units na matagal ng na-import? Baka naman mag take advantage 'yong mga may stock pang mga unit.

Sino ba ang hindi gusto ang brand new? Lahat naman siguro tayo gusto ang ganun.

But in my case, I have always dreamed of owning Toyota and Cruiser VX LC80 model since it was released in the market on the early 90's. But the price of this unit is just way above of what I can afford (kahit ipa-finance ko pa). Early on we bought a brand new nissan sentra series III because its the only thing that we can afford (at that time the VX cost 1.8 to 2M already while the sentra is only around 400K+) but I was not happy with what I bought because that is not what I really liked so I sold it after a few years. Now with the influx of this JDM market, my dream has come true, it made my dream car affordable. If your real concern is safety, then you can have the conversion re-worked like what I did. You will be amazed of what our local mechanics and body builder ca do. Of course, I installed the proper conversion kit and replaced lahat ng may mga dinudugtongan and mind you it is as sturdy as the original plus I was able to choose and install good after market parts that I want installed in my ride. The total cost of which is still below half of the amount they are currently charging for a new one or slightly used local version of same model.

Ang sabi nila "junk" na raw ang mga sasakyan na ito but so far after two years of having my unit smoke emission tested marami na rin itong tinalo sa linis ng emmission. In short nasa pag maintain lang yan.

Of course bibili rin ako ng brand new VX in the future if I have that much moolah.... wish ko lang.....

So, do you think the P 500 K special tax on 2nd hand imports is retroactive or only applicable to incoming units? This applies to ADB cars also?
