Metro workers to get P22 wage hike
By Mayen Jaymalin (The Philippine Star) Updated June 08, 2010 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC) announced yesterday that workers in Metro Manila are finally getting a P22 increase in their daily take-home pay after two years of waiting for adjustments.

NWPC executive director Ciriaco Lagunzad III said the wage board in Metro Manila came out with a new order granting a P22 increase in the daily minimum wage of workers after a series of deliberations.

Sources from the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) said the increase brings to P404 the daily minimum wage rate in Metro Manila.

“The adjustment will be added to the daily basic pay, but it will only cover minimum wage earners in private companies in Metro Manila,” one of the sources said.

The increase will take effect 15 days after the publication of the new wage order in national dailies or probably before the end of the month.

Labor groups led by the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) had filed a formal petition seeking a P75 across-the-board increase in wages.

While welcoming the latest wage increase, TUCP expressed disappointment over the minimal salary hike.

“TUCP is disappointed at how little the wage board thinks the workers deserve, so although we do not want any delay in the implementation, we will be filing a motion for reconsideration of the decision,” said TUCP official Raffy Mapalo.

Mapalo said workers are doubly disappointed because the wage increase is not across-the-board.

    tumaas ang cost of labor

so ang response ng employers either magtataas ng presyo ng goods/service OR magbabawas ng tao

hindi across the board to.. minimum wage earners lang or those earning Php382.00 per day only.. if you're getting above that.. may distortion formula.. say you're earning Php500.00 per day..

    (382 / 500) x 22 = Php16.808 per day increase

Tama ba computation mo? Mas maliit ang increase sa mga higher wage earners?

that's usually the prescribed formula.. nagiging mas maliit ang mga higher paid.. since effectively ratio lang sya ng current minimum to the new minimum...

but in reality, employers seldom use this formula especially for the really higher paid (especially especially kapag key people sa business).. at least kung magkano yung rate sa minimum na dinagdag, yun din nilalagay.. para status quo lang... yung mga empleyado.. di gaano mag complain bakit lumiliit ang gap between their salaries (which a lot of employees often spend time on comparing who gets how much and what among them, instead of just doing work hehe )....

in another context... dito sa pilipinas, halos every year ang increase ng salary... mandated pa ng government... ang gastos lang ng government is yung sahod nya sa wage board (yung government employee lang a, because labor and employer sector hindi naman binabayaran ng gobyerno to sit in these meetings)... and yet walang support man lang to improve productivity sa industry / employer side... own lookup pa ng employer on how to remain competitive...

in other countries, malaki ang suporta sa competitiveness.. dahil dyan, booming ang business at industry... kaya ang trabaho, kaliwa't kanan.. market prices talaga nananaig sa job market since maraming jobs available to choose from.. employers are forced to raise their pay lest they end up with no workers or the workers which they don't want...

So everyone will somehow get an increase regardless of the salary?

yes, ganon talaga.. mas malaki sahod, mas maliit increase.. yung ibang company binibigay na din as across the board para wala nang distortion formula.. pero malaking bagay din yan eh.. kung meron kang 100 na tao.. 22.00 per day X 100 = 2,200 per day x 26 = 57,200 increase per month din yan.. or 743T per year (kasama 13th month).. san mo kukunin yan kung same din lang naman productivity at sales??
