I've been based outside the country for more than 10 years.

And yes, Pinoys are not comfortable speaking in English... Yes we have call centers, english teachers and nurses, but iilan lang sila sa population natin.

Sad part is that the "Pinoy Dream" is not to be a lawyer and doctor (etc)... Majority of the people is either asking the government for help, trying to be a singer, or wants to be part of PBB. That big break to be a star/model/singer, travel the world and post it in instagram!

Politicians make long speaches in tagalog, radio stations are in tagalog, TV news and series are all in tagalog.

Binago kasi yung medium of instruction sa mga public schools, from english ginawang pilipino.

You should applaud the parents for teaching their children young.

AFAIK, primary and secondary schools have been bilingual (Filipino and English) since the 80s.

""In 1974 the Bilingual Education Policy (BEP) was established. The Soriano Committee recommended the use of both English and Pilipino as media of instruction in both elementary and high school, depending on the domain (or subjects). "English domain" refers to teaching in English for English Communication Arts, Mathematics, and Science. "Pilipino domain" refers to teaching in Pilipino for Pilipino Communi* cation Arts, Social Studies and History (Department of Education, 1974). ... The BEP was recast to refer Filipino (now spelled with an f as the language of literacy and scholarly discourse while English is referred to as the inte ational language and non-exclusive language of science and technology (Bernardo, 2004). EDCOM, the Congressional Commission for Education was formed in 1991. It advised for all subjects, except for English, to be taught in Filipino. This recommendation remained to be unimplemented."

What happened to PH education? I grew up in the 80s and back then majority of Filipinos had decent English. IIRC, noon time shows were in English format and majority of celebrities were well spoken. Ngayon puro mga sablay na like that Vice Ganda which I abhor.

This video is all over FB with a lot of people finding it funny. I don't see anything funny, in fact, it's disheartening.

Current DepEd head's solution is mandatory ROTC and CMT and more security personnel on campus.

Because around the 90s, the woke lawmakers passed a law mandating ALL school subjects be taught in Pilipino ... ALL ... mathematics, science, computer, etc ...

The issue is kapag nageenglish ka, sasabihan ka pa na conyo. Maarte.

    Use it or lose it.

Pero among southest asian nations, our accent are neutral. In short madali intindihin kahit barok.

Learning English is not tantamount to foregoing nationalism.

Most western European countries still use their native tongue as primary language. But your typical frenchman will still be able to competently converse in English, both in speech and writing, when necessary.

Nationalism is a lousy excuse when the real problem is that our school systems aren't effective enough in equipping students with globally competitive English capabilities.

The problem is the deped system, they cannot remove a teacher for negligence of work, may alaga lang sila students para yun ang pang sali nila sa mga competition para mag mukha magaling ang school. Talamak ang leakage ng nasyonal exams to make their school have a high passing grade.

I thought yung plan to increase salary of teachers will be a very good solution but i guess hindi nagawa sa expectation ko.

My daughter joined the local deped competition dito sa province namin.
