I have a Nuvi 1300 which I bought in Kauai, Hawaii 2 yrs ago. Worked very well there and when I got back, I joined Roadguide.ph. Downloaded Training Center, then Mapsource and was able to get regular map updates after contributing waypoints and other POI's. The unit worked very well and continues to serve me well. However some glitches have come up:

    1. I can't update my contributor's map anymore, and it's been like this for 3 months now. A glitch happened to Mapsource and despite reinstalling, I can't get it to run.

    2. Since I bought a lifetime update for my US map, I updated it before going to the States last month. To my surprise, the unit wouldn't pick up a satellite signal no matter how many times I restarted. My guess is, something may have gone wrong with its software ever since I got Mapsource and the local maps. So when I rented a car in the States, I had to add money for a GPS. Kainis.

    3. After coming back, I tried my Nuvi and it was working very well. Picked satellite signals on the way home from NAIA.

Has this happened to other Garmin users? What remedies were you able to take?

    Thanks.

Mabilis lang bro.... about 30sec to a minute siguro... Pero depende sa condition ng panahon,- overcast, sunny etc....

I have a couple of 260Ws (4.3-inch display).... Very reliable units. Just the very basic that we need, as other services are not supported here in the Philippines,- like traffic situations et al... Of course accuracy is totally dependent on the map that you are using.

There are maps available that are shared,- so no issue.

problem lang with lower end models is the loading time at startup. if you have a huge map with lots of POIs, it would take a while before you can use your gps.

I loaded a complete map of europe into a friend's garmin (1200 series or was it 1400?), it took almost 30min to load!

Yes bro.,- However, that is offline with a computer.

It appears that loading is not direct addressing to the flash memory of the Garmin unit, but through some flash controller/buffer. That should account for the long loading time...

However, access time of the map, when the Garmin unit is in use, is fast.

^^^ Better to get nuvi 50. It's lighter and has better touch screen response compared to the 1450.

    Unit: Nuvi 1300
Date and Place Bought: Oct 2010, Hawaii (Kauai)
Pros: Works well. Quite accurate. Screen data is big enough to see even w/o my reading glasses.
Cons: Like most GPS units, signals can get affected by tall buildings, lalo na yung maraming reflections; also cloudy, rainy weather. Sometimes, street readings can be inaccurate, i.e. when traveling on a certain street, the name of the next parallel street is the one displayed on the unit.
Usage: When brought to Manila, I joined Roadguide.ph and downloaded the Phil. map. Became a contributor and have been using contributor's map since. Downloads are free and since contributors help in developing maps, updates are quite frequent. Very helpful in a city like Manila where traffic rules, closed roads, traffic rerouting can change often.

Note to 1st time users: A GPS unit will often direct you to the main roads and not the alternatives. For example when traveling from Makati to Pasig, it will most likely direct you to EDSA and not C5. Best to study your Google maps as well. Coz when you take the alternative route, the GPS unit will help with directions from wherever you end up in.

I assume the original got damaged? f you're not the brand conscious type, try CD-R King. They have several styles to choose from: CDR KING. I bought a dash mount from there for my Nuvi 1300, and haven't had any problems with it.

May Garmin Nuvi 765 po ako, pwede po ba ma load ang Philippine map dito? Paano po ba? Salamat!

    Guys,

Ano ba ang advantage ng dedicated navigation device such as Garmin compared sa mga smartphone?
Meron akong Nokia E52 which I use for driving navigation and I find it sufficient for my needs. Features I like are the voice navigation and the capability to store maps in the phone (no need for data plan). Nokia Ovi maps are updated naman and freely downloadable from Nokia website. Been using it for almost 2 years na.

What are the specific advantages of a dedicated GPS device like Garmin, etc?

Assuming the maps are equal,- a GPS unit has a dedicated GPS processor. Smartphones share the CPU resource for its GPS navigation/computation, so relatively slower.

However, if you are happy with the speed of your GPS/Smartphone,- they you should be okay.

But i dont think its the maps fault, di kasi ganun kaayos kalye sa pinas.

Tanong ko lang sa mga naka garmin and naka quantum na tint, gumagana pa ba garmin nyo sa lob ng kotse?

I have a 2360 lmt garmin unit. Bought it in the us for 50% less than they are sold here. Phil maps were loaded c/o map sources in internet. I also have 2 apps on my iphone. Paid apps motion-x gps wherein map downloading is PITA. But as soon as you have it in your phone, it will work offline. No POIs though but i can mirror the apps on my jvc hu. No voice guidance here. Another app installed is citymaps2go. Map is free and download is a breeze. Only 1 regional map can be stored though. Buy the app for usd1.99 and store as many maps as you can. No voice guidance here but can search for POIs near you. This also works offline. Garmin, it depends on which map type you install, some map sources are detailed and updated and mostly obsolete and missing roads and structures, has POIs search, speed, altitude, bearing, alert on the distance you need to turn left or right. Can be used in car mode or walk mode. I use 3m tint on my windshield and iphone and garmin works just fine. I only need an updated map. Sources please!
