I hope someone can help with this one as I have a gut feeling that I am not alone in this dilemma.
For me, one of the most stressful things to do in life is to go to a place that is unknown to me. For the longest time I have had to settle with paper maps as a means to get me thru those days when I have to go somewhere unfamiliar. Although those maps help, it is still a pain and does not really offer the comfort and peace of mind that the GPS gives and thus, my query.
Last year I was able to use a GPS navigation system by AVT/accu-map. I was amazed at the convenience that it gave. I was so excited that finally GPS has finally reached the Philippines. I was actually already planning to get me a unit. Then a few weeks after that, I came across a friend using a garmin device with the roadguide.ph map (I’m not sure if it was contributor map or just the free one). But from my limited experience between the two, here are my conclusions:
    1. In terms of map accuracy and completeness, I think the AVT/accu-map has an advantage.
    2. The Garmin has better interface, more features, easier to use and well, is a more respectable brand.
    3. Both have free maps so far.
Right now I am using Garmin mobile XT with OSM maps. It does the job but I would have to say that AVT/Accu-maps still has a better map. Having said that, I was actually poised to investing on a decent AVT unit w/ Accu-map in it. But a week ago I came across this new brand Vector that the agent says is the new GPS system being offered by accu-map. I am now having a really hard time on deciding which way to go. Talk about needing help with navigation. Anyway my choices are:
    A. Buy an AVT unit and hope that even though they are no longer connected with accu-map, they will still continue to provide superb and free map updates.
    B. Buy a Garmin which has excellent GUI and features but settle for the OSM map as I doubt that I’ll have the time to contribute and get the updated roadguide.ph map.
    C. Buy the new kid on the block vector and see if accu-map is really the reason for the AVT’s success in recent times. I’m not sure about the interface and features of vector though.
    D. Wait and see if Garmin will provide official map releases for the Philippines which is better than the other maps or at least at par with accu-map supplied maps. Or is there one already?
Any inputs regarding these will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to everyone.

I bought my AVT PN401 for 8K dun sa Manila International auto show, sabi nila naka 50% off dw from 18K naging 9k nalng tapos 8k na lng if cash buyer, pero doubtful ako eh kung totoong 18K price ng PN401. 18K nga ba talaga or na-goyo lang ako?
Sulit na yan. I got my PN401 for little less than P14k. Wala kasing promo.

Dude, our company bought both Vector and AVT and comparing the two products in our Marikina road trip yesterday, AVT got 9 points and Vector got only 5 points. Criteria are based on practical routing, signal reception and signal continuity along the MRT routes, GUI, road names and POI accuracy (wrong spelling wrong!, misplaced POIs).

I got a feeling that an inaccurate road map will only make an impressive UI look ugly. Accuracy of the navigation device is still a priority.

Got 1360 with official Philippine navteq map. Ok naman. Can update map with Garmin Singapore for limited time. Me junction view pa sa selected junctions, me picture na lumalabas approaching the junction. Sana magkaroon later ng lifetime map update parang sa states even if we have pay a little. As compared sa roadguide, mas maraming POi young roadguide pero mas accurate young street names sa navteq.

for me 18.5k is quite expensive for a unknown brand of GPS. hardware wise malamang these gps came from china na nilagyan lang ng AVT brand, same with CDRKing products (actually may available ng mga GPS sa cd-r king running on licensed windows CE daw: CDR KING)

for 8.5k you can get a Garmin na, just slap in the free OSM or the standard roadguide map to get you going (basic navigation pareho lang naman with the road guide contributors map, pero POIs madami talaga ang contributors map),
youll get tons of support pa: software, community, customization etc. official or third pary. even google earth supported ang garmin, so kung may nakita kang some good points of interest sa google earth direct transfer agad sa garmin.

baka in two years maka tatlo or apat na release lang sila ng map updates parang lugi yata ah.

What is the model of 8.5k Garmin and where can i buy it in Metro Manila? Thanks.

    Good PM Everyone,
I am connected with ReinbrantRoadtech, an authorized dealer of AVT Navigational Systems
AVT Navigation System - Car Finder Buy and Sell New Used Cars Philippines 2011

We are selling AVT Navigational devices as well as other devices like anti-car theft/trackers.

Not to sound biased, but I just want to clarify a few things with regards to AVT.
    1. AVT does NOT charge a subscription fee/update fee/annual fee for the update of the maps. They are absolutely free for AVT device owners.
    2. Maps are updated quarterly, not from contributions, but are resourced by hired/professional surveyors from iNAV. Hence, the reason why AVT is the unit installed on almost all OEM cars.
    3. Full customer & product support is available locally.
    4. AVT maps are NOT compatible with Garmin...Sorry.

If you guys are interested or have any questions, you can contact me so I may email you the brochures.

Thanks and more power to Tsikot.com
