Depends what you mean by "compact".
If we're talking compact class, such as the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, etcetera... the Ford Focus TDCi is the most economical car with an automatic transmission. The difference between that and the gasoline cars is so big, it's not funny.
If we're talking subcompact and supermini... well... automatic transmissions and tiny engines don't often work well together. Your best bets would be a Toyota Vios 1.3 or a Honda City/Jazz 1.3. Smaller engined cars often see a bigger penalty on the highway because of too-low gearing, but can match or better these two for city economy.
If you really want good economy from a small car, the only answer, really, is to buy a manual transmission. Current automatics exert too much drag on small engines, leading to relatively poor fuel economy and performance compared to their manual counterparts.Last edited by niky; August 15th, 2009 at 03:04 PM.
