what are the best ways in measuring fuel consumption more accurate? what are the things should i consider? I heard of some tips but I'm not sure what are the reasons behind it. Please comment on the items below if the following really make sense.

    1. Have a fulltank on cold engine. Then refill it on the same cold temperature.
    Why?
    2. Just fill it up until it "ticks".
Why not fill it up to its brim?
    3. Refill on the same fuel station.
    Why?
    4. Tilt/shake the vehicle first to remove air from the tank. (i just heard of it)
    Is this true?
    5. Maintain the same driving style and route.

any more tips in measuring fuel consumption more accurately?

    Hmm... none.

    1-4, Never observed them.
    5. No choice, same route and driving almost every day, hehehe.

My measurement of fuel mileage is far from scientific. I fill up in any Shell station, sometimes Caltex, once Petron. Sometimes I ask the tender to top the brim sometimes not. Sometimes I wait till the red warning light says near empty tank. Sometimes, I fill up already when fuel tank is still half full.

My method is not scientific nor accurate but more like an empirical method of fuel mileage measurement. You'd need more experiment to confirm it. From this I get between 14km/li and 18km/li. That's fine with me.

tingin ko kaya wait till it ticks kasi parang pre-set na yung amount ng gas in such a way na hindi aapaw yung gas. hindi siya filled to the brim... ang nakita kong problema sa filled to the brim is because parang tumatapon. before the e-vat got implemented, nagpa-full tank ako, filled to the brim yung halos umapaw na sa puno tapos tightly closed the lid ng gas tank. kaso in the morning parang tumapon yung gas kaya sayang lang... kaya hindi siya ganun ka-accurate to have it filled to the brim

here's how i measure my mileage.

    1. I fill tank to full, automatic stop when full thats it. no filling to the brim.

    2. I always put in the same station, same pump and on the same side of tthe pump. I also put at night most of the time (wala lang less traffic )

    3. then just divide the kms run by the amount of fuel you put in on the next fill.

    hope this helps

    Marvin,

Regarding filling up on cold temperature. i heard it was so because when your engine is hot, the molecules of the fuel in the tank tends to expand, giving you inaccurate measurements.

Perhaps that's the very reason why some drivers prefer to refill during nightime since the fuel in gas stations are cooler, fuel molecules are more compact.

Nighttime or early morning for me. As much as possible, avoid filling up between 12nn to 3pm. These are normally the hottest hours of the day, when the fuel in gas stations tends to "expand", giving the illusion of volume. You'll end up paying for mostly air instead of fuel.

afaik, kapag automatic na nagstop yung gasoline pump, ibig sabihin ay nareach mo na yung 40- or 45-liter mark mo (depends on the manufacturer). kaya ginagawa yan para ang reference mo ng "full" is always the same and para accurate ang reading mo all through out. HTH

    1. Have a fulltank on cold engine. Then refill it on the same cold temperature.
    Why?

when it's hot, the gas tends to evaporate faster. so the volume that goes thru the pump meter is actually less than what ends up in your tank, because some has already evaporated even before the gas reached your tank.

    2. Just fill it up until it "ticks".
Why not fill it up to its brim?

the tick is more or less a uniform way of telling you that you have a full tank each and every time you fill up. if you can fill up to the brim at the exact level each and every time, that would work too. it's just a matter of getting constant volume each time you fill up.

    3. Refill on the same fuel station.
    Why?

some stations may have inaccurate fuel pump gauges. some may down right be cheating.

    4. Tilt/shake the vehicle first to remove air from the tank. (i just heard of it)
    Is this true?

not true, and not necessary. when you fill up, the gas will displace the air in the tank.

    5. Maintain the same driving style and route.

    driving style yes.. but route?

There is really no way to come up with exact fuel figures as the conditions are always variable. The best you can have is an estimate of your consumption. Here are some other tips to make the measurements as precise as possible.

    1. Top up at the same gas station, at the same pump.
    2. If filling up with a colder engine is better, just let your engine cool down at the same amount of time before full tank.
    3. Since you cannot follow one exact single route and driving style twice, the best you can do is keep your right foot and RPMs as consistent as possible.

ako same station, brand and kind of fuel. yung pump mahirap kasi minsan empty na yung pump na yon.
