I just learned that gasoline contains 2 kinds of octanes, the RON or research octane number, and MON or motor octane number.

The RON is the one being published in the gasoline stations as 93, 95, 96.

A gasoline may have enough RON but insufficient in MON.

Can somebody explain this. What's the difference between the two? How would we know if the MON contents is right for our cars.
