Around 200 actually. And they burst test them with water instead of air. A tire bursting at 1000 psi of air tends to bring down any structure within a 50-foot radius

Yeah... even truck tires at 300 psi can wreck steel burst cages.

Pumping four tires to 55 psi by foot is good exercise.

I don't know what will raise more eyebrows... the 55psi or pumping the air by foot.

Yep. That's the only reason why i get nitro pa rin with our cars that get "tired" at S&R. For the rest, i just go to the gas station.

Pumping them by hand is even better ... used to do it using air compressor but it took longer to set it up and store it compared to just using a hand pump ...

The foot pump is more compact. I keep it under my seat.

Not too impressed with the hand pumps I've seen, but it would be nice to have a good one for use around the house.

As I have stated on the first page, air is composed of 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, and 1% other gases.

More to the point, since oxygen permeates through rubber more readily than nitrogen, eventually your 80% nitrogen fill (normal air) will reach about 90%, as long as you keep re-inflating it (at high pressure) with regular air.

As the percentage of nitrogen increases, the air loss per week slows down.

Unless you have a good gas detector that you can somehow tap inside a tire, then you can check the presence of various gases inside. Back in chem lab class before, combustible gases (oxygen or hydrogen) are easier to weed out by a splint.

Won't ever get there.

The Partial Gas Law means that oxygen will only leak out until it equalizes with the outside air.

So, if your tire is inflated to twice atmospheric pressure... about 30 psi (from 14.7 psi), and outside air is only 20% oxygen, then your oxygen will leak out until you have only 10% oxygen inside. Inflate to higher pressures, like I do, and it'll get down to about 6-7%.

As an aside... most pump nitrogen is only 93-95% pure.

One interesting idea, and I've mentioned this before... is using refrigerant to fill tires. I know one guy who's experimented with this, and has found that the tires hold their pressure much longer still... though filling with refrigerant is obviously much more expensive than nitro-filling!
